Along with optimizing game development engines, developing infrastructure and workflows for efficient remote and hybrid development, brings new opportunities and engineering challenges that all studios are facing today. Solving these challenges is critical to enabling efficient hybrid teams as well as external globally distributed development partners who help scale during peak phases of development. At The Coalition Studio, through our work on the acclaimed Gears of War franchise, we are tackling these problems head-on by leading engine innovation, developing technical showcase technologies, and delivering world-class workflows, tools and features that are adopted across the wider Xbox Game Studios organization.
We are seeking a Senior Tools Engineer to join our team at the Xbox Games Technology Group at The Coalition. We are looking for someone who with proficient C++ & C# skills, Unreal Engine experience (UE5) and a passion for building user facing tools and features to empower our development teams. You should be able to communicate clearly as you will get to partner with some of the most creative and diverse people in the games industry; helping to design, develop and maintain tools and workflows for our cutting-edge projects. This role will be closely aligned with our Machine Learning team to explore novel ways to improve developer efficiency across game teams.
Responsibilities
Design, implement and support features, tools and workflows for AAA Next Generation games, which can range from in-editor tools, workflows and features for the Unreal Engine through to standalone applications.
Embedded with our Machine Learning team to bridge the gap between ML solutions and our tools and workflows to improve development efficiency.
Work closely with various disciplines, including artists, designers and other engineers, to gather requirements, deliver and iterate on features for our customers.
Work side by side with various stakeholders to create, enhance, and troubleshoot content workflows and tools.
Help monitor, identify and troubleshoot issues and inefficiencies to increase the overall effectiveness of the development team.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
Preferred:
5+ years experience in game development or similar 3D media using C++, C# and Python.
Experience developing tools and pipelines with Unreal Engine 5.
Effective communication and problem-solving skills to facilitate working closely with other engineers, artists and designers.
A growth mindset and ability to jump into new tools and workflows provided in the engine.
Experience integrating machine learning libraries or services into production ready systems.
Exposure to a 3D Digital Content Creation (DCC) package and customization/scripting techniques in that package (MotionBuilder, Maya, Houdini etc)

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $114,400 - CAD $203,900 per year.
