Training Captain

Term of Employment: Full-Time, Continuing
Rate of Pay: Captain T/O S/O: $61.06 per hour (Subject to LFFA Local 5182 of the IAFF Agreement)
Location: Fire Hall 1
Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Fire Chiefs, the Training Captain will ensure operational readiness by requiring leadership, coordinating logistical needs, and providing support services necessary for emergency response, training, fire prevention, and fire rescue daily operations. This position will provide mentorship and technical expertise in competency development for fire and rescue services in collaboration with Fire Rescue administration team.
Duties General
Provide leadership/mentorship to department members in all aspects and job functions;
Contribute to a positive workplace culture that supports teamwork, respect, and continuous improvement;
Collaborative and professional interactions and working relationships with the public, fire rescue personnel, and other city staff;
Participate in administrative, special projects and committees assigned by the fire rescue administration;
Provide input on fire department budgets to Fire department administration;
Participate in Corporate safety initiatives and engaged in Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety committees;
Promotes corporate and departmental directives, policies, procedures, and standards with all fire rescue personnel;
Attend/lead fire rescue programs in the areas of training, fire safety, education, inspection as assigned/requested to develop and maintain job knowledge, skills and abilities;
Duties Operational/Training
Responds to fire/rescue incidents as required;
Ability to function as Incident Commander as required;
Ability to function as Fire Captain/Duty Captain as assigned/required;
Ability to function as the Incident Safety Officer as assigned:
Maintaining/coordination of inventory for all uniform, personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools/appliances and feedback for replacement cycles for such items;
Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and administration of fire rescue comprehensive training programs and annual competency program schedule;
Develop, maintain, and evaluate training policies, standards and procedures to meet industry standards and best practices, in alignment with NFPA standards and other certifications;
Evaluate firefighter competencies and recommend follow-up training where required;
Assist in developing training budgets and make recommendations on training resources;
Responsible for the review and facilitation of training and certification records for all departmental personnel;
Duties Fire Prevention
Participate in the development and implementation of fire prevention and public education programs within the City;
Compliance with Fire Code and Fire Inspections within the City;
Assist Duty Crews with assigned fire company inspections;
Provide Fire Investigation for origin and cause and written reports for follow-up as requested;
Provide positive engagement in regard to Public Fire education and safety initiatives to the community;

Other related duties as required.
Schedule:
Typical work schedule is Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and may be required to work weekends, holidays, evenings and nights as necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Qualifications:
Completion of High School diploma or equivalent;
NFPA 1001 Level 1 and Level 2 Firefighter qualifications;
NFPA 470 Awareness and Operations (or equivalency NFPA 1072 Operations);
NFPA 1002 Fire apparatus driver/operator (Chapters 4/5/6);
NFPA 1021 Level 2 Fire service officer ;
NFPA 1041 Level 2 Fire service instructor;
NFPA 1521 Fire service incident safety officer;
ICS 200;
Certification as a Medical First Responder (Preference- Medical First Responder Instructor);
Minimum seven (7) years experience in a firefighting position or related emergency services field combined with minimum 2 years of proven leadership facilitation, project management and team building skills in fire rescue or emergency related environment;
A valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract is required;
Additional assets
NFPA 1030 (or equivalency NFPA 1031/1035);
NFPA 1033 Level 2;
ICS 300;
CISM or related Peer team related training;
Fitness Leader certification (Fit to thrive or equivalent programs/certificates);
Completion of Post-Secondary Fire rescue and/or medical education;
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Successful applicant must provide proof of all qualifications.
Must be able to pass a medical examination, physical capacity assessment and possibly aptitude testing.
Applicants with international education will be required to include an Academic Credential Assessment with application.
