Role at a Glance
We are looking for a seasoned professional to fill the role of Project Manager, Architecture. This role is perfect for someone who has multi-disciplinary knowledge of project management principles and practices. As a Project Manager, you'll be independently managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects, particularly those within the scope of the Architecture Team.
In this client-facing role, you will be making recommendations on project organization requirements, work methods, and procedures. Additionally, you will be responsible for writing and administering contracts, establishing effective working relationships, providing expert advice, leading business development activities, and overseeing the performance of reporting personnel.
The Project Manager, Architecture, is a key representative of our firm, responsible for the overall leadership and management of projects from inception through completion. You will actively lead, direct, and manage projects with a forward-thinking, solutions-based mindset daily to ensure customer and project team success. You'll also have the authority to speak for the firm in dealing with the customer in all routine matters associated with the project.
What You Will Do
Architectural Design and Technical Leadership:
Collaborate with the design team (within the architecture studio and across engineering disciplines) and the project design principal to develop and manage design, technical project development, and documentation for efficient and sustainable project delivery.
Coordinate and communicate with clients on project development and management issues throughout the project lifecycle, including attending and/or leading project meetings with clients, stakeholders, sub-consultants, and authorities.
Manage and coordinate the preparation of drawings and specifications at each project deliverable stage (SD, DD, Tender, IFC, etc.).
Oversee project application and review processes with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
Coordinate and integrate the work of other design disciplines, whether internal to WF Group or external consultants.
Manage the project construction budget (in collaboration with the project quantity surveyor) and performance objectives through the development of project design.
Provide leadership in developing technical details and documentation on projects, which may include direct roles in construction document development, BIM modeling, detailing, specification development, and technical support on projects you are not directly managing.
Lead project design and documentation quality assurance processes, including document checking and markups, cross-discipline coordination within the WF Group Quality Assurance framework, and review of project design, technical issues, and documentation with the stamping professional/principal architect.
Communicate with and mentor multidisciplinary teams regarding lessons learned.
Contract Administration:
Administer construction contracts following applicable legislation and best practice standards, including various CCDC contract types (CCDC 2, 5A/B, 14, 30, etc.).
Serve as the primary point of contact for construction administration processes, including general client, contractor, and sub-consultant correspondence; RFI response; submittal review; and development of supplemental instructions or project changes (PCN, CO, CD).
Attend construction site visits and progress meetings, prepare field review reports, and conduct and prepare deficiency reviews.
Review contractor payment applications, issue certificates for payment, and review project closeout documentation.
Review and assess project status at closeout, prepare the certificate for substantial performance, and coordinate with the stamping architect for issuance of final review letters.
Financial Management of Architectural-Prime Projects:
Monitor and manage project performance, including development and maintenance of project schedules and work plans, appropriate staffing utilization, and project financial forecasting.
Coordinate with the accounting team on project invoicing (AR, AP) and tracking of project percent complete.
Business Development Activities:
Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients, ensuring lasting client satisfaction and identifying new project opportunities.
Conduct business development activities, including fee development, proposal preparation, and participation in interviews.
Staff and Practice Leadership:
Manage and lead internal project team members, including assigning work activities and ensuring project development aligns with design objectives and client expectations.
Collaborate with other practice leaders to develop and maintain practice leadership and project management standards.
Promote Integrated Design and a collaborative team approach within the Toronto Studio.
Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to team members within and outside your immediate project teams, focusing on design, technical matters, project management, and strategies for successful project delivery.
Collaborate with architectural leaders to discuss innovative strategies for advancing both system and process improvements.
As your role progresses, you will have the opportunity to become a Team Leader, providing regular coaching to a team of staff members, focusing on their development and long-term success. This includes conducting performance reviews, holding regular one-on-one meetings, discussing career progression, managing performance and work conduct, and assisting with staff development and training plans.
What You Bring to the Table
Bachelor's degree or college diploma in Architecture, or related field.
10+ years of experience in project management or related roles, with a focus on overseeing complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
Enrolment in or completion of PMP, and licensure with OAA would be considered an asset.
Advanced knowledge of project management principles and practices.
Thorough knowledge of Canadian/Ontario and other relevant codes and standards (i.e. NBC, ESC, CSA, IES, IEEE, NFPA, ASHRAE).
Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to devise practical and economical solutions.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships.
Superb communication, time management and multi-tasking skills, with a strong emphasis on attention to detail
Experience in contract administration and business development activities.
