How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Technician, Environmental for the STEP team at TRCA is responsible for assisting in field logistics and supporting field teams working on various environmental programs and/or the monitoring, collection, analysis of environmental data.
The Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) was established by TRCA in 2004. STEP is a multi-agency initiative developed to support broader implementation of sustainable technologies and practices within a Canadian context. STEP works to achieve this overarching objective by:
Carrying out research, monitoring and evaluation of clean water and low carbon technologies;
Assessing technology implementation barriers and opportunities;
Developing supporting tools, guidelines and policies;
Delivering education and training programs;
Advocating for effective sustainable technologies; and
Collaborating with academic and industry partners through our Living Labs and other initiatives.
Major Responsibilities:
Collects monitoring data at STEP monitoring projects. This involves, but is not limited to:
Installation, operation, and maintenance of field monitoring equipment including field and lab calibrations
Collection and processing of monitoring data and performing field level QA/QC on data
Communicates with product vendors to ensure that each monitoring device is properly installed in the larger monitoring system.
Responsible for assembling, installing, and managing data acquisition hardware and data collection for various environmental sites and buildings.
Provides quality control of field records, data, and detailed technical assessments.
Conducts regular site visits, including initiating contact with private property owners and other stakeholders as required.
Assists with the coordination of materials, equipment and services as required.
Participates safety meetings for site work including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.
Ensures compliance with occupational health & safety policies and practices, and other TRCA policies, as applicable in various work environments.
Collects, organizes, and executes data collection including the collection and management of energy, temperature, flow, biological, water quality and/or hydrologic and/or data on other relevant environmental and building parameters.
Takes part in the construction and instrumentation of sustainable energy research projects and technology demonstrations.
Works in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
Assists in drafting technical reports, presentations, etc. under supervision
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
Post-secondary diploma or degree in Engineering, Physics, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license.
Experience
2+ years experience in performing the major responsibilities of the role.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
Sound data management skills; experience working with databases and GIS software
Sound communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the team.
Experience interacting and connecting with persons of various social, cultural, or economic backgrounds; at ease with a variety of audiences.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate project status for various audiences.
Able to self-manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating environment.
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
Proficiency in MS Office suite, including online software such as MS teams, WebEx, and SharePoint); advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis, data visualization.
Working knowledge of measurement instrumentation installation and maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to use hand and power tools for building and construction trades.
