The Health and Safety Advisor supports ATCO EnPower’s Operations, Projects and Construction teams. This role supports our Renewable assets and teams. The Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for providing support, coaching, guidance, and mentorship to front-line leaders and field teams, including contractors and visitors regarding ATCO EnPower’s health and safety culture and requirements. The Health and Safety Advisor will work collaboratively with team members to develop and continually improve health and safety programs, processes, tools, and training materials. This role is critical to supporting compliance, safety culture, and the advancement of health and safety performance.
Responsibility Area #1 – General Requirements
· Collaborate with all ATCO EnPower functions and departments to anticipate, identify, evaluate, and determine practical solutions to health and safety issues/risks
· Coach and guide employees and contractors on ATCO EnPower’s Integrated Management System (EIMS), health and safety programs and processes, and OHS legislation
· Assist with the interpretation of legislation and recommend compliance solutions
· Lead health and safety projects/initiatives, as required
· Participate in updating ATCO EnPower Integrated Management System (EIMS) documents and processes
· Assist with the communication and implementation of health and safety programs and processes
· Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) as an OHS subject matter expert
· Attend safety meetings and support the delivery of key health and safety messages
· Create and deliver health and safety presentations
· Conduct research and keep up-to-date on health and safety innovations, industry trends, and best practices
· Develop safety communications such as Safety Alerts and Learning From Incidents Bulletins.
· Perform on-call duties for Health and Safety support for emergencies and critical events
· Safely drive to worksites
Responsibility Area #2 – Hazard, Risk and Emergency Management
· Participate in, review and/or facilitate hazard and risk assessments
· Participate in pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR)
· Help in the completion of Job Risk Assessments (JRAs) during the work planning phase.
· Support the continuing development and maintenance of emergency response and business continuity plans
· Participate in or assist with facilitating emergency response and business continuity events, exercises, drills, and tabletops
Responsibility Area #3 – Health and Safety Assurance
· Ensure the Safe Control of Work and all planning, execution, and close-out of work is performed to established standards.
· Participate in incident investigations as a health and safety subject matter expert. Perform the role of lead investigator or root cause analysis facilitator, as required.
· Conduct job observations, worksite inspections and audits
· Conduct quality reviews of incidents, near misses, observations, and hazard identification reports
· Monitor health and safety performance and analyze trends
Responsibility Area #4 – Health and Safety Orientation and Training
· Support employee and contractor orientation and onboarding
· Support the development of internal health and safety training courses
· Facilitate internal, company-specific health and safety training
Responsibility Area #5 – Project Support and Contractor Safety Management
· Participate in project planning activities, kick-off meetings and progress review meetings
· Assist with the development of project health and safety management plans and Job Risk Assessments (JRAs)
· Participate in contractor safety pre-qualification/qualification, monitoring, and assurance activities
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
· Education in Occupational Health and Safety
· 5-7 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in the energy sector
· Strong knowledge of industry best practices within the energy industry, the Alberta and Ontario OHS legislation, and other applicable municipal, provincial, territorial, or federal legislation
· Solid understanding and experience in workplace inspections, work observations, program reviews and management system auditing
· Intermediate analytical and problem-solving skills
· Proficiency with HSEQ management software, databases, and applications
· Proven ability to maintain confidentiality of information and records
· Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Teams
· Strong report writing and verbal communication skills
· Demonstrates diplomacy, flexibility, listening and persuasion skills
· Builds and maintains positive working relationships
· Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
· Exercise tact, discretion, and sound judgement
· Influence and collaborate with management, employees, and contractors to achieve safe behaviors in a non-confrontational manner
· Flexibility to travel within ATCO EnPowers’ operating areas to support operational and construction activities and to maintain relationships with field-based groups
· Ability to complete overnight stays when travelling to distant worksites
· Ability to safely operate a vehicle
This position is a safety-sensitive role, and pre-employment alcohol and drug testing is required as per ATCO’s Alcohol & Drug Practice and Standard. Being fit for duty is critical for this position.
