Posting Close: January 9, 2026 General Accountability This senior legal management position requires over ten years of experience as a member of the bar. The successful candidate will oversee a team of corporate lawyers and administrative staff responsible for preparing, reviewing, and evaluating corporate contracts and legal agreements for SGI and its regional operations. Key Accountabilities Note: This section is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities – other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. Corporate Matters (50%) Leads, prioritizes and monitors the preparation, review and vetting of any contracts entered into between the corporation and its external clients. Analyzes, organizes and reviews corporate documents focusing on the implications of moderately or extremely complex legal issues. Evaluates, analyzes and advises all lines of business of the corporation and its subsidiaries on matters of procurement law, and assesses, anticipates and defines parameters of legal risk to enable business areas to execute on matters of strategic importance. Research (15%) Conducts in-depth legal research and prepares legal briefs on his or her own files and advises and guides all business areas of the corporation and its subsidiaries to ensure business practices align with legal and regulatory requirements. Upon request, conducts general research on any matter tangential to the practice of law as it affects the business operations of the corporation. Provides ad hoc oral and written legal advice to internal customers on an as needed basis. Assists in coordinating and maintaining both legal precedents and legal opinions prepared by the Legal department. Advises and collaborates with all business areas in providing legal opinions on legislative and contractual interpretation policy wordings and business practices. People Leadership (10%) Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities. Ensures development of divisional succession plans. Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans. Drives performance through team members and is committed to leadership development across the company, supporting employees and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities. Training (10%) Maintains expert knowledge of insurance practices, and in particular, legal issues which impact on the corporation’s lines of business in order to advise and support business areas, and disseminates gained knowledge to the business areas. Participates in both internal and external ongoing legal education and business courses and develops expertise in each of those areas. Maintains familiarity with existing insurance law, and any other areas of law procedural or substantive which may directly or indirectly impact on the corporation’s business endeavors and pursuits in order to advise all lines of business of the corporation. Corporate Management (10%) Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies. Manages risk in area of authority. Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets. Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items. Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements. Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities. Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority. Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff. Education and Experience A law degree. Called to the bar in the applicable jurisdiction. Ten years’ experience comprised of six years of leadership experience and four years as a lawyer with a focus on corporate commercial law and insurance related legal practices. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of substantive and procedural laws. Knowledge of the Automobile Accident Insurance Act, The Traffic Safety Act and its associated regulations. Knowledge of the Saskatchewan Insurance Act and related legislation and regulations in the applicable jurisdiction. Knowledge of all acts in the applicable jurisdiction that directly or indirectly impact on the corporation’s core business. Knowledge of the rules and responsibilities surrounding legal ethics. Knowledge of insurance practices and, in particular, the legal aspect which impact on the corporation’s lines of business. Knowledge of the practices and procedures of all levels of courts in the applicable jurisdiction. Ability to critically analyze complex corporate law issues across a broad range of legal issues. Ability to coordinate, prepare and advocate moderately complex matters or legal principles. Ability to distill moderately complex concepts and present them in layman parlance.
