The Middlesex-London Health Unit is seeking a motivated, self-directed student for field training in Public Health Inspection within the Environmental Health, Infectious Disease, and Clinic Services Division. Practicum positions are available for a 17-week employment period, from May 4, 2026 to August 28, 2026.
Under the direction of the Manager, Food Safety & Health Hazards, the successful incumbents will:
Conduct compliance inspections in recreational water, food safety, personal service settings;
Investigate health hazard complaints and animal bite incidents;
Work on special projects as assigned by the Manager;
Participate in Vector Borne Disease program activities; and,
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Enrollment in or graduated from an Environmental Health/Public Health Program.
Candidates must be eligible to sit for the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors exam in October 2026.
Proficiency in the areas of documentation, electronic information systems, Microsoft Office, and database software.
Effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to act in a calm and professional manner.
Familiarity with MLHU and the region it serves.
Capable of working independently.
Availability to work flexible hours and/or on weekends.
Possession of a current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
Possession of a valid Class “G” driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle for work-related purposes is required.
Possession of public health related certification(s) or courses additional to the public health curriculum would be an asset.
Previous volunteer or work experience in Public Health or community-related organizations would be an asset
Candidate has the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse population and knowledge of health equities.
The rate of pay for this position is $23.00 per hour.
