About Us

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Volunteer Responsibilities The Collective Closet Deputy oversees the operations and marketing of the Collective Closet, a service run by the Commission of Environmental Sustainability. This position is responsible for the clothing swap program run out of the Closet, and collaborating with external stakeholders on joint projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for environmental sustainability, and sustainable fashion practices. Time Commitment, Eligibility and Remuneration 8-month volunteer term from September 1- April 30 with a time commitment of approximately 10 hours/week This is a volunteer position, but deputies are eligible for an honorarium at the end of the school year if they successfully complete their duties All part-time AMS volunteers must be enrolled in at least 18.00 credit units (60 of a full course load as determined by your program) both at the time that they apply and for the duration of their term, and have paid the full slate of mandatory fees and their AMS Membership Fee. Responsibilities Oversee and maintain the in-person clothing swap service that operates under the Commission of Environmental Sustainability Host clothing swap pop-ups if weather and public health permits Conduct social media campaigns related to fast fashion and environmental impact throughout the year Oversee the creation of graphics for the Closet’s social media Prepare scheduling for volunteers Create community through events Campaigns and projects as per the Deputy’s decision in conversations with the Commissioner Build relationships with AMS resources, networks, and external clubs/organizations Create a timeline of projects for the year Respect and adhere to all procedures as outlined in the service Discipline Policy Follow all AMS policy as outlined in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Manual Complete evaluations and attend evaluations meeting Attend regularly scheduled meetings Maintain at least three regular office hours per week Useful Contacts Commissioner of Environmental Sustainability at ces@ams.queensu.ca The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
