The Department of Molecular Genetics holds a leadership position in Canada and internationally as a premier venue for biomedical and life sciences research and education. We have over 100 faculty members. Our dynamic community of over 350 graduate students is engaged in M.Sc. and Ph.D. Program in Molecular Genetics. We offer a professional M.Sc. in Genetic Counseling as well as M.H.Sc. in Medical Genomics. Futhermore, the department provides a rigorous undergraduate specialist and major in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. Our faculty, fellows, and students are highly acclaimed for pioneering phenomenal advances in some of the most exciting areas of modern science with a profound impact on human health.
As Laboratory Technician, you will support the Roy lab with ordering reagents and autoclaving, maintaining biosafety and chemical storage standards, maintaining equipment in proper working order (arranging for repair), and manage culture incoming and outgoing strains (including DNA stocks, bacterial strains, yeast strains and nematode strains that include C. elegans).
Your responsibilities will include:
- Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
- Providing laboratory support including organizing supplies, materials, inventory (chemical and biological), determining lab setup requirements, and maintaining biosafety records
- Handling, cataloging, and shipping DNA, yeast, small molecule, and nematode stocks
- Preparing and analyzing samples for mass spectrometry including passing onfindings for mass spectrometry data
- Performing small molecule screens and analyses with the nematode C. Elegans and yeast S. cerevisiae
- Transfecting cultured human cells and performing a variety of assays with them
- Maintaining and operating a variety of lab equipment
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology or a related field, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum one year relevant experience in a research laboratory or industry setting
- Experience with routine lab operation is essential, including experience with purchasing lab supplies, preparing material and reagents for the lab
- Experience with bacterial, yeast, and C. elegans culture, microscopy, and transformation
- Experience with DNA, yeast, small molecule, and nematode stocks
- Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry
- Experience transfecting cultured human cells and performing a variety of assays with them
- Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with a positive and forward-thinking attitude
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, including task prioritization and record- keeping
- Ability to work under pressure with scientific deadlines
- Ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues
- Manual dexterity and close attention to detail
Assets (Nonessential):
- Exposure to maintaining and operating lab equipment including but not limited to 80C fridges, liquid nitrogen tanks, mass spectrometer, HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), a variety of up-right microscopes, C. elegans microinjection apparatus, centrifuges, pH meters and weigh scales
