The Director, Finance is accountable for financial and management reporting and providing accurate and timely financial information for decision-making in support of all Canadian Wood Products' operating groups as well as regional and head office corporate functions. With responsibility for the oversight of delivery of service of accounting, budgeting, reporting, internal controls, cash management, financial analysis and forecasting, the Director, Finance provides overall leadership and direction to the accounting and finance function team at the Canadian sawmills as well as regional and head office corporate groups.
This position provides primary support to the VP, Controller, through operational forecasting, planning and strategic initiatives. Additionally, the position provides support to the Vice President, Canadian Operations, for financial matters and analysis, as well as strategic and operational planning.
A day in the life of our Finance Director will include:
Accounting and Reporting
- Oversees and manages the delivery of accounting and reporting of mill operations and corporate functions, ensuring accurate and timely financial information to enable day to day and strategic decision making.
- Prepares, coordinates and consolidates financial statements for Canadian sawmills as well as regional and head office corporate functions. This includes forecasts, trends and data variance analysis reports.
- Continuously improves the quality and integrity and accuracy of costing data, and its variances.
- Works with the VP, Controller, and mill and corporate management to continually evaluate the financial models, reports, and KPIs used to monitor the mills/corporate functions to ensure that they are relevant and that they support decision making conducive to financial and operational effectiveness.
- Ensures monthly reports are prepared on time to meet scheduled datelines and other ad hoc requests.
- Ensures reporting compliance with IFRS, and all legal requirements related to financial management, and provincial and federal requirements.
- Responsible for issues highlighted from reports to ensure full understanding of the data and variations, so as to provide management with appropriate analysis and recommendations.
Operating and Capital Budgets
- Leads the preparation of the annual operating, quarterly forecasts and capital budgets for the operations and corporate functions, that reflects the objectives, plans, and priorities. Continually evaluates ways to streamline or to improve on the budgeting and forecasting process.
- Ensures the capital budgets are supported by a strong business case and in-depth financial analysis.
- Reviews capital expenditure to ensure that in accordance with capital guidelines.
- Provides financial leadership role in operating-wide initiatives e.g. synergy and other cost savings / value added initiatives, alignment of reporting etc.
Accounting Policies, Procedures and Controls
- Oversee the development of business processes, internal controls, systems and procedures to ensure the integrity of information.
- Responsible for ensuring the existence of appropriate safeguards to protect the company's assets.
Cash/Working Capital Management
- Provide financial leadership role in effective working capital and cash management, and business optimization of working capital.
General Management
- As a member of the Canadian Operations' Leadership Team, participates in the leadership of the overall business of the Canadian sawmill operations.
- Provides support to the development and implementation strategic and operational plans.
- Provides financial advice to the senior management on all aspects of financial data and analysis on the respective business unit's performance.
- Review mill capital projects and participate on the Steering Committee for large projects.
- Adopts continuous improvement principles.
- Provides direct overall financial support for Vice President, Canadian Operations.
- Ensures that all corporate and mill specific policies and internal control requirements are communicated to mill management.
- Develop an understanding of the local product market for lumber and highlight the risks to the manager.
Staff Management
- Provides leadership to the finance team for Wood Products Canada and Corporate Groups and fosters an environment which motivates the team to fully use its capabilities in achieving desired business results.
- Establishes and clearly defines responsibility for staff on the team and ensures the ongoing management and support of staff and effective employee performance.
Audit
Oversee audit processes, liaises with auditors, accountants, banks and other subject matter experts.
What you will have:
- An undergraduate university degree coupled with a professional Accounting Designation.
- A track record of experience and success in a senior accounting or finance position, in a Manufacturing setting, such as Controller/Mill Controller, or Regional Controller, or Director in a manufacturing environment, with at least 10 years of experience of progressive financial/accounting experience.
- Excellent business and financial acumen; demonstrated ability to provide highly effective support to the business through rigorous financial analysis and working with business leaders in using data and KPI information to formulate decisions.
- Solid analytical and quantitative abilities, problem solving and decision-making skills. capabilities with the skill to draw appropriate conclusions and presentations.
- Strong software application skills and able to use financial analysis \& presentation tools (e.g. Excel, Power Point) to a proven / advanced level.
The salary range for this position is: $157,000.00-$196,500.00
