Job Description
Accountabilities:
- Promotes the Salvation Army vision and mission in practice.
- Serves as an active, supporting member of the Corps Management Team.
- Participates in community events (July 1st Parade in Qualicum Beach), fundraising events, food drives, kettle campaign.
- Leads regular retail team meetings, ensuring all mission partners have an opportunity to contribute ideas/suggestions for greater mission impact and retail success and to voice issues/concerns for appropriate follow-through by senior leadership.
- Ensures all mission partners understand and work in support of The Salvation Army's mission/vision/values and retail operations reflect missional mindset.
- Coordinates weekly staff devotions for all Retail Operations, encouraging participation of all mission partners.
- Acts as a member of recruitment and hiring committee, orientates, trains, evaluates, recognizes, disciplines, and terminates based on Territorial/National standards.
- Manages health and safety, labor/employee relations and other related issues at a store level.
- Maintains/updates the staff schedule/payroll data entry in employee database (Workday).
- Helps store associates make connections with customers and demonstrate a values driven workforce.
- Directs and supervises the work of a truck driver; with the use of phone calls holds a truck driver accountable during the work alone hours.
- Takes responsibility for all stores staffing issues and requests (no-shows/leaves of absence/personal days off).
- Travels between two store locations and warehouse daily to provide oversight and management.
- Orients volunteers: creates volunteer job descriptions and supervises the work of volunteers.
- Responsible for 18 or more employees (fulltime, parttime, casual) as well as recruitment, retention, and management of volunteers (with support of Volunteer Coordinator).
- Works with the Program or EDS Coordinator to deliver emergency and disaster supports (clothing, household goods vouchers, etc.) as directed by Community Services Director or Corps Officers.
- Ensures that staff has access to the Thrift Store Manual and operating policies of The Salvation Army.
- Directs all operations of the stores to meet sales targets and control expenses while maintaining customer service standards.
- Responsible for proper handling of petty cash at both stores, reconciliation procedures and end of year reporting.
- Gives supervision to sorting and recycling procedures.
- Works with merchandiser to plan store layout to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays, decides on in-store promotions and auctions and keep abreast of marketing trends by checking competitor's stock; ensures attractiveness of the store through "Tidy Maintenance".
- Determines and maintains appropriate inventory levels based on spot checks of the store and reviewing weekly sales records.
- Maintains control of inventory by ensuring store donations are retrieved, sorted, and priced appropriately; protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
- Orders and delivers supplies to Qualicum Beach Store.
- Ensures in-store safety for staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spillage and maintains store cleanliness dealing with volatile situations); ensures properties (stores) are always secured.
- Responsible for overseeing and managing Thrift Stores vehicles (includes charging of electrical vehicle, completing daily mileage reports and daily vehicle inspections).
- Ensures vehicles are maintained and serviced accordingly, to keep up with the highest safety standards.
- Conducts regular checks to ensure properties (Parksville, Qualicum Beach Stores and warehouse) are well-maintained and identifies necessary repairs.
- Assists with minor property repair tasks in both stores and warehouse.
- Contributes to the process of Ministry Unit budget preparation.
- Establishes and manages in-store budget within guidelines; executes budgetary objectives by attaining sales margins, maintaining staffing cost ratios, and profit objectives as established by the region; ensures nightly sales are deposited into the appropriate financial institution.
- Analyzes store financial statements and strategizes appropriate action to attain financial goals, monitoring the cost of goods (i.e., buying products from warehouse, tracking costs associated with product, etc.).
- Prepares financial and other requested reports to the administrative office for all stores (e.g. sales reports, staffing costs, and payroll data).
- Responsible to access the potential for expansion/development of retail operations (i.e. expansion onsite, additional sites, etc.) to create and present proposed action plans to the Senior Management Team.
- Performs other duties as assigned within the Thrift Stores operations.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Internal
Governance Boards and Councils:
- CMD's/COs meetings, Thrift Stores Management Committee; Thrift Stores Supervisors Committees; Health \& Safety Committee, Retail Staff Meetings (leads meetings).
External
- Community, customers, donors, supporters, CS guests (vouchers program).
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY
- Reports directly to CMD (in CMD's absence to Corps Officers).
- Direct Reports: Thrift Stores Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors, Senior Sales Associate, sales associates, Bay Workers, Expeditor, Truck Driver and retail operations volunteers at both locations.
Financial And Materials Management
- Supports preparation of annual budget for Retail operations, monitors regularly.
- Moderate material responsibility (equipment, goods, etc.).
- Limited input into new policy development.
- Handles credit cards payments and moderate amounts of cash daily.
Human Resources Management
- The incumbent is responsible for the direct supervision of non-supervisory personnel, including volunteers and students. He/She has input into supervisory decisions within the established guidelines.
- Gives direct oversight to 19 or more fulltime, parttime, casual staff and volunteers, provides direction concerning current tasks or consult with assignments.
- Responsible for overall recruitment, hiring, performance management (PEACs), discipline for all store staff.

Education, Qualifications And Certifications
- The successful job applicant will have completed a bachelor's degree in business administration.
- NOTE: An alternative level of education (studies in marketing, sales, and communications) and retail experience may also be acceptable.
Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements
The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
- One year but less than three years of prior related experience, including retail, marketing, and store management experience. A background in fashion is desirable.
Skills and Capabilities: The performance of the job requires:
- Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, and clean Driver Abstract is required.
- Understanding of workplace health \& safety requirements, WHMIS, universal precautions applicable to retail/warehouse environments.
- Continuously standing for long periods of time, frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting, kneeling and occasionally keyboarding for longer periods of time.
- Attention to detail, continuous visual monitoring.
- Computer skills, including spreadsheets, databases, scheduling software.
- Organization and scheduling skills to manage multiple team members' availability.
- Proven history of training employees and guiding them towards success.
- Excellent customer service insight and friendly attitude.
- Ability to lead a team towards a common goal, i.e. monthly financial targets and fostering cooperative work culture between the two stores.
- Experience with budgeting and financial tools.
- Strong organizational, excellent time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The incumbent must be able to multitask, performing several jobs at the same time.
Work Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Saturday (flexible hours during kettle campaign).
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $54,814.39 to $68,517.99 with a maximum of $82,221.59. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
