Located in Hamilton's downtown core, Hamilton General Hospital provides leading edge care and is home to a number of regional referral programs. The neurosciences and trauma program is a provincial leader in both volume and complexity of care provided. The HGH stroke program has pioneered an integrated approach to care, and our burn treatment program is one of only two in Ontario. The cardiac and vascular program performs more heart surgeries and procedures than any other facility in the province.
5 South is a post cardiac surgical telemetry unit providing step-down level of care. An interdisciplinary team provides both tertiary and community level care to cardiac surgical patients.
As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse assesses, coordinates, provides and evaluates patient care in collaboration with the Registered Nurse on the unit according to the 5 South Core competencies and Standards of Practice. The RPN will participate in continued education and completion and maintenance of certifications associated with the identified nursing skills and completed learning plans to achieve these goals.

- Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
- Current certificates or current community college studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, physical assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, medication administration (including Intravenous), and transcribing physician orders
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience (within the last 2 years) in acute care
- Demonstrated skills in IV starts, ECG and pacemaker rhythm interpretation/treatment
- Completion of a Critical Practice Orientation (ABG interpretation, adult code blue management, shock)
- Documented completion of a recognized IV administration and IV Management, Venipuncture and Blood and Blood Products Administration course
- Current BCLS Certificate
- Demonstrated ability to function within an interdisciplinary team including nursing collaboration with RN and other members of the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to function in environments that are fast-paced and that have moderately complex care requirements
- Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families, and other members of the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient needs
- Demonstrated knowledge of transfers and lifts protocols/practices
