Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario ("the AGO") is one of the largest art museums in North America, with a collection of close to 100,000 works. At AGO Art Camp, we believe in fostering creativity and imagination in young artists. We are currently seeking a Temporary Full-time, AGO Art Camp Programming Lead Counsellor to join our Education \& Programming team. Under the direction of the Manager, Studio Programming and Learning, the incumbent will research and develop recreational activities, games and resource materials for individual group and camp wide activities. They will be responsible for coordinating, scheduling and leading all day-to-day camp wide programming outside of the studio, including morning announcements, and coordinating all required materials and props. They will support groups when needed to effectively execute their programming. They will collaborate with the other Lead Counsellors to lead volunteer evaluation, and they will bring a sense of camp spirit to all of their programming and work and is able to engage small and large groups of children with confidence.
Under the direction of the Manager, Studio Programming \& Learning, the AGO Art Camp Programming Lead Counsellor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the camp program including staff, volunteer and camper safety. They will provide excellent front line customer service (in-person, by phone and email), liaising with parents/guardians, campers, AGO staff, volunteers and patrons of the gallery. They will cover for camp counsellor absences and fellow lead staff absences as required. They will plan and lead activities in collaboration with the Manager, Camp Coordinator, fellow lead staff, counsellors and volunteers. The AGO Art Camp, Programming Lead Counsellor supports camp staff and volunteers indoors and outdoors as needed to run programming, promote well-being and maintain a safe camp environment at all times. They will mentor counsellors and volunteers throughout the summer, demonstrating best practices in behavioural management, customer service, program planning and delivery, health and safety awareness, and administrative processes. In collaboration with the Senior Staff team, they will implement a comprehensive counsellor and volunteer training program for the AGO Art Camp. They will write an end of summer report, summarizing all recommendations and suggestions for the following summer.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
- Enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program in visual arts, education, physical education, health and recreation or other appropriate areas of study (or within 24 months of graduation)
- Experience in child behaviour management and supervising groups of children (aged 5-13) in an indoor/outdoor camp and/or educational environment
- Experience in developing and leading activities for children in both small and large groups
- Experience working with children with exceptionalities or special needs is an asset
- Enjoys working with children and youth
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent problem solving and team-building and training skills
- Strong interest in the visual arts
- Basic computer skills (word processing, data processing)
- Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C is required before start of employment
