Position Overview:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will provide financial leadership and oversee all financial operations of TIFF, ensuring sustainability, operational efficiency, and strong financial governance. As a key member of the executive team, the CFO will play a crucial role in shaping the organization's strategic direction by aligning financial strategy with the objectives of TIFF's mission and business. The CFO will lead process and system implementation efforts, enhance stakeholder engagement, and bring deep expertise in not-for-profit financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Partner with the CEO and the Finance and Audit Committee of the board of directors to drive the organization's financial strategy in alignment with its mission and long-term goals.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making, including growth initiatives, risk management, and financial sustainability
- Lead financial scenario planning, forecasting, and impact assessments to inform strategic priorities.
Process \& System Implementation
- Oversee TIFF's financial systems, policies, and internal controls to optimize efficiency and transparency, updating where necessary.
- Collaborate with TIFF's digital leader and CEO to drive automation and digital transformation in financial reporting, compliance, and donor management
- Oversee fund accounting structures to effectively manage restricted and unrestricted funds.
Stakeholder Engagement \& Compliance
- Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, grant-making bodies, government agencies, and financial institutions
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and other not-for-profit financial reporting standards
- Lead financial reporting to the Board, funders, and regulatory agencies, ensuring accuracy and alignment with organizational objectives.
Financial Operations \& Risk Management
- Oversee budgeting, cash flow management, investment strategies, and financial risk assessments.
- Ensure strong financial controls and compliance with all financial policies.
- Lead efforts to secure and manage funding, grants, and partnerships, ensuring sound stewardship of financial resources.
Organizational Strategic Direction
- Lead the annual budget-setting process, collaborating with members of the Senior Management and Management teams to deliver an optimized budget for presentation to the board.
- Actively contribute to the development and execution of the organization's strategic plans, ensuring the best balance of financial sustainability and programming to deliver on TIFF's mission
- Work collaboratively with leadership to identify opportunities for expansion, impact measurement, and financial innovation.
- Align financial resources with programmatic goals, ensuring long-term resilience and operational effectiveness.
Qualifications \& Experience
- CPA, CMA, CFA, or equivalent financial certification preferred.
- Minimum of eight years of senior financial leadership experience, preferably in a not-for-profit organization
- Excellent communication, leadership, and strategic thinking capabilities.
- Expertise in nonprofit accounting, fund management, and financial reporting.
- Experience leading financial system implementations and operational improvements
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with financial management software (e.g., Netsuite, Excel)
- Knowledge of government and corporate funding, donor reporting, applicable tax law, and fundraising compliance.
- Experience managing finance teams in a not-for-profit setting
