Key Activities
Arts Alive is the school, youth, and family programming hub at Canada's National Arts Centre, where theatre, dance, and music come alive. A cross-departmental collaboration between all the artistic programming departments at the NAC, Arts Alive supports and develops performances, workshops, special projects for families and schools and produces professional development events and resources for educators and teaching artists. Activities take place in the National Capital Region and across the country, often in association with community partners.
Reporting to the Director, Arts Alive, the Manager of Learning \& Engagement leads the coordination of the cross-departmental Arts Alive team to support, develop, and produce a broad range of L\&E programs. The Manager works with the Director and the Arts Alive Coordinator to support the Arts Alive team and oversee its effective functioning in day-to-day operations, as well as the fostering and maintenance of a healthy, productive, and innovative work environment.
As well as coordinating the internal team, the incumbent will:
• Manage and coordinate the review, improvement, and implementation of internal, cross-disciplinary tools and processes in collaboration with NAC artistic disciplines and departments
• Act as the NAC's main liaison and maintain relationships with all 10 school boards in the NCR, including participation in a variety of school board events to nurture these key relationships and build the profile of Arts Alive and the NAC
• Act as Arts Alive's main liaison with the Learning \& Engagement staff from the NAC's artistic disciplines
• Initiate, facilitate and/or manage selected local and national partnerships
• Oversee the selection, contracting, and supervision of teaching artists for selected local and national in-person and/or virtual events for youth, schools, and families
• Oversee the ongoing development and improvement of the Arts Alive Versolo booking system
• Supervise the Administrative Support Associate and guide the work of the Arts Alive Coordinator
This role may involve weekend and evening hours, as well as occasional travel.
Skill Requirements
• Minimum of five (5) years of related work experience;
• Post-secondary studies in arts administration, communications, education, or a related field (or an exceptional level of professional experience in lieu of formal study);
• Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of pedagogical curricula and educational practices and policies (pan-Canadian);
• Experience with producing and presenting learning \& engagement programming;
• Experience in trouble-shooting workflows and processes, problem-solving actionable solutions that work within an organizational structure, and implementing new processes;
• Experience in management and leading teams in a complex and changing environment;
• Bilingual - Strong verbal and written skills in both English and French;
• Strong sense for creative processes, particularly within a learning environment,, and the ability to anticipate and support the needs of teaching artists and co-producing partners;
• Exceptional time management and organizational skills, including budget management;
• Ability to evaluate and manage priorities, work on multiple initiatives simultaneously, and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, complex environment;
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of the sensitivity required when working in a creative environment;
• Familiarity with, and deep interest in, the performing arts and learning \& engagement landscapes at local and national levels;
• Familiarity with, and deep interest in, decolonization and equity, diversity, and inclusion in performing arts and education/learning;
• Ability to evaluate and manage priorities, work on multiple initiatives simultaneously, and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, complex environment;
• Computing skills including Microsoft 365 and Adobe CS;
• Experience as a practitioner and/or educator in theatre, music, or dance is an asset.
