Job SummarySurrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) is inviting applications for the position of Interventional Cardiologist (IC). There are three IC positions available, two with a required start date in December 2025 and the third required to start spring/summer 2026.
SMH is located in the Lower Mainland and is part of the Fraser Health Authority. SMH is the 2nd largest hospital in BC with nearly 800 beds and has the busiest ER department in Canada. Inpatient cardiology has a 9-bed CCU and an 18-bed telemetry ward, with plans for further expansion in the coming months.
The cardiology program at SMH is in a period of expansion and we will be opening 2 new purpose-built cardiac catheterization laboratories in November 2025 immediately prior to commencing our Interventional Cardiology service, which has been jointly commissioned by Fraser Health and Cardiac Services BC as part of the regional strategy for Cardiology. The service will commence as a stand-alone service with support from the regional Cardiac Surgery service at Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), until 2030 when we anticipate the addition of a second critical care tower at SMH will allow us to commence on-site Cardiac Surgery at SMH.
The successful applicant(s) will join the Cardiology Department that will consist of 15.5 FTE general cardiologists, and our recently appointed regional co-director of Interventional Cardiology, to create a 4 IC team with potential for additional IC positions from 2027 as the service grows. In addition to daytime interventional work, ICs will participate in interventional cardiology on-call, outpatient clinics and supervision and teaching of medical trainees. Interested ICs should note that structural heart interventions are NOT commissioned at SMH and remain at RCH, so structural work will not be part of the job description for these IC positions.
We are seeking experienced ICs with at least 2-years of independent practice in a high-volume centre following completion of Interventional Cardiology training fellowship. Expertise or academic publications in coronary physiology, intracoronary imaging and/or CHIP CTO intervention are desirable. A background in medical education or clinical trials are also desirable.
Please forward all enquiries to Local Department Head, Dr. Courtney Young: Courtney.Young@fraserhealth.ca or incoming SMH Regional Co-director for interventional cardiology, Dr. Dwayne Conway SMHIClead@fraserhealth.ca
