MU363 (Fall-Winter)- Music Therapy Practica
In these experiential placement courses, each student works together with another student music therapist to facilitate group or individual music therapy sessions under the supervision of a qualified music therapy supervisor, either in community settings or at the Laurier clinic. Students also attend weekly small group or dyadic supervision meetings, which focus upon developing clinical musicianship, planning sessions, conducting assessments, writing goals, understanding the dynamics of therapeutic process, and problem-solving clinical issues that arise. During these courses, students build ethical therapeutic relationships and expand ethical thinking, navigate issues of professionalism, and foster their capacities for reflexivity.
MU455a (Fall), MU455c (Fall)- Music Therapy Practica
This practicum course builds upon the clinical and musical facilitation skills developed in MU363. Each student works together with another student music therapist to co-facilitate group music therapy sessions in community settings, under the supervision of a qualified music therapy supervisor. In tandem with MU455C, students deepen their understanding of the dynamics of therapeutic process while honing their clinical musicianship through planning and facilitating music therapy sessions. Students refine their clinical writing skills through regular session documentation as well as through formulating assessments, developing goals and objectives, and evaluating therapeutic progress. Students build ethical therapeutic relationships while navigating issues of professionalism in community settings. Students attend weekly dyadic supervision meetings.
MU458a, MU459b – Music Therapy Internship (Winter)
These courses are a full-time, pre-professional clinical placement in a community setting, providing students with the opportunity to complete their internship through the Canadian Association of Music Therapists. It is expected that students will work approximately 500 clinical hours per term, including 150 hours of direct client contact. Students integrate their clinical musicianship into the planning and facilitation of group and individual music therapy sessions while learning to sustain collaborative and collegial relationships with interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. Students develop clinical documentation skills according to their site's specific practices, participate in professional development activities, put ethical standards into daily practice, and develop their capacity for reflexivity and the safe and effective use of self. Students receive 15 hours of individual clinical supervision from a qualified music therapy supervisor per term.
MU504 – Music Therapy Placement I (Winter)
Working with a peer, students gain experience in a co-therapy model facilitating music therapy group sessions in the community and individual sessions at Laurier's on-site clinic. They learn how to apply basic skills within a music therapy framework, to structure and facilitate the therapeutic process with diverse client populations, establish rapport, use effective professional communication and listening skills. Students develop clinical documentation skills, writing notes, formulating assessments, and creating collaborative client-centred goals and objectives. Students practice maintaining effective relationships by employing empathy, respect and authenticity, demonstrating sensitivity to the setting, and responding effectively to client's verbal and non-verbal communication. Students apply ethical principles, demonstrating personal and professional integrity, and applying the safe and effective use of self. Throughout the term, students review clients' therapeutic process and progress, and make appropriate adjustments. At the end of the sessions, students review progress and make a recommendation whether to continue or conclude therapy. Weekly supervision is provided by Laurier faculty who are qualified and experienced music therapists. This course is directly connected and integrated with the concurrent MU505, MU506, and MU507 courses, during which the practicum experience, client assessment, therapeutic goals, therapeutic interventions, and theoretical frameworks are further discussed and explored.
