Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for a motivated and independent individual to conduct tree inventories in the Region of Waterloo. The successful candidate will be completing field assessments of trees in urban and rural settings. This position provides an opportunity to apply experience in tree identification, health and hazard assessment, data analysis, and project coordination. This position is primarily field-based within the Region of Waterloo. The successful candidate will report to one of NRSI’s Certified Arborists. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
Working independently to collect fast-paced tree inventory data using hand-held GPS units;
Assessing and identifying tree to species, health, DBH, and general arboricultural comments;
Conducting tree health and hazard assessments, largely for trees located on road right-of-ways;
Utilizing maps to navigate, coordinate and plan fieldwork;
Driving vehicles (personal or company-provided) on urban and rural roads;
Communicating frequently and as required with project managers and other field staff; and
Occasional assistance with other field- or office-related tasks.
Your Education:
A diploma or degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Biology, or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational experience will also be considered
Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture OR a Registered Professional Forester with the Ontario Professional Foresters Association (Full Member or Forester-in-Training)
Key Job Requirements:
Proficient in the identification of trees found in rural and urban Ontario
Willing and able to travel to survey locations within the Region of Waterloo or elsewhere in southern Ontario, as required;
Ability to work in inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours;
Ability to work independently on a regular basis;
Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well-organized and detailed field notes;
A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle insured for work purposes; and
Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
Assets:
Familiarity with ArcGIS and/or iTree softwares;
ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification;
A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes (authorized mileage will be reimbursed).
