Position Summary
The Operations Accountant reports to the Financial Controller and is broadly responsible for operations accounting. This position maintains the integrity of the College's financial business model, ensuring that transactions are posted in an accurate, timely manner consistent with generally accepted accounting principles, public sector accounting standards, and internal management accounting practices.
The position also has responsibility for balance sheet accounting related to fixed assets, deferred donations, bank reconciliation, cheque and electronic funds processing. The responsibilities involve the extensive use of the ERP system’s financial and logistics modules.
Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Operations Accounting
Adheres to Bow Valley College’s operational accounting policies, procedures and structure and makes suggestions for improvements.
Ensures the integrity of the BVC financial business model by verifying project coding and making adjustments as required.
Follows up on new or unusual transactions to ensure they are properly accounted
Financial Reporting
Performs month-end, quarter-end, and year-end processes and journal entries for
Advises on coding for journal entries, capital purchases
Performs additional year-end calculations and analyze variances; assist with notes to financial statements as required
Assists team members with processing and reconciliation issues; provides quality control over journal entries; provides assistance to staff regarding ERP system functionality.
Analyzes discrepancies and makes appropriate reconciling
Ensures policies and procedures are followed to ensure proper reconciliations and accounting treatment.
Capital Maintenance and Fixed Asset Accounting
Maintains the fixed asset records in accordance with policy, ensuring additions are properly accounted for on a contributed or non-contributed basis.
Runs and posts monthly and annual amortization in ERP system ; reviews results and reporting on net book value of assets as required.
Ensures disposals including gains and losses are accounted for
Transfers assets from WIP to be capitalized and creates IDs for new capital purchases in fixed asset module.
Ensures capital purchases are in compliance with College policies and procedures and accounting standards.
Donations, Student Awards
Monitors student awards and balances in deferred revenue and endowment accounts; including investment income allocation as required.
Oversees donations accounting in accordance with revenue recognition policies as required.
Other duties in related area as required.
Required qualifications:
Accounting Certificate
3-4 years of related experience
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
