Position: Fluid Power/ Mechanical Designer
General Purpose of the Role:
Design custom automation equipment and associated fluid power systems to meet client and internal specifications. This includes mechanical design, pneumatic system integration, and collaborative engineering within cross-functional teams. The role calls for a blend of technical expertise, creativity, and practical application of design principles to develop solutions that are functional, safe, and efficient. The designer will work through all project phases from concept to completion and support the build, testing, and documentation processes.
Responsibilities
· Interpret and apply project scope based on customer specifications and internal quotations.
· Track progress and maintain communication with Project Managers to ensure timelines and budgets are met.
· Release and verify BOMs in purchasing systems; ensure timely procurement of long lead items.
· Support assembly team during machine build and debug phases.
· Collaborate with documentation and technical writing teams to ensure completeness and accuracy of manuals.
Fluid Power Design
· Design pneumatic and fluid power systems including schematics, air prep assemblies, and safety-integrated circuits.
· Apply CSA Z142, Z432, and Z434 safety standards to all fluid power system designs.
· Perform air consumption calculations and select appropriate components (valves, cylinders, fittings).
· Collaborate with Mechanical, Controls, and Electrical teams to ensure cohesive system design.
· Review and assist with valve bank layout and placement in mechanical designs.
· Develop and maintain fluid power libraries and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
Mechanical Design
· Create and detail mechanical designs for fixtures, jigs, and automated machines using SolidWorks.
· Design cost-effective, easy-to-assemble, and maintainable mechanical systems.
· Work independently or in collaboration with lead designers and cross-functional teams on complex automation projects.
· Update and maintain “as built” drawings and documentation as necessary.
· Generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for purchased parts and manufactured components.
· Participate in client meetings to review and present design concepts for approval.
· Ensure compliance with ISO9001 quality procedures and relevant safety standards (e.g., CSA Z432, Z434).
· Compile risk assessments of new equipment based on design intended use and maintenance
· Support the Build Team as required during equipment assembly and testing.
· Generate cycle time charts, and I/O lists in coordination with cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
· Diploma or Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent.
· 5+ years of experience designing custom automation equipment and pneumatic systems.
· Proficient in SolidWorks, EPLAN Fluid (or equivalent pneumatic schematic software), AutoCAD LT, and MS Office tools.
· Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and mechanical manufacturing processes.
· Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices.
· Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
