Reporting to the Director, Sustainability Assurance and Management Systems, the Lead, Sustainability Compliance is responsible for guiding Teck’s sustainability compliance strategy. This outstanding individual will support the sustainability assurance program, ensuring adherence to compliance obligations and voluntary responsible mining standards. This qualified lead auditor must have a detailed understanding of responsible production standards in the extractives industry with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. This will be crucial to effectively build productive and collaborative relationships across Teck with team members, site practitioners and functional teams. Strong organization, prioritization and project management skills are also a must.
The position is global in scope covering all geographic areas in which Teck is active! As a result, the position will require up to 15% international travel to various Teck site locations. The role will work closely with the Manager, Management Systems and Integration, Manager Sustainability Assurance and Teck personnel at the enterprise and regional functions. Implementation of the compliance strategy and external sustainability assurance will continue to support performance improvement, reduced risk exposure and legal and financial liability.
This individual will collaborate closely with diverse teams and external consultants to effectively drive the compliance strategy and sustainability assurance program. While the role does not include direct reports, it requires strong leadership and coordination skills to ensure seamless teamwork and successful implementation. The role will also be responsible for the development and capacity building of skills in Teck to support the compliance strategy.

Responsibilities
Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
Oversee the curation and management of Sustainability compliance programs for Teck. In doing so, partner and lead teams at sites to ensure compliance obligations, registers and responsible mining standards are adhered to and promote standard practices in ESG performance
Manage the compliance working group to establish processes for compiling compliance obligation registers with practical requirements for operational implementation to mature compliance (specifically the 1st line defence)
Identify all compliance obligations for Health, Safety, environmental and Community (HSEC) for all jurisdictions in which Teck operates
Screen and track applicable compliance obligations per site from the Teck compliance obligations register. Develop this for each site under the management control of Teck
Develop practicable tasks per compliance obligation to support sites in implementation of the 1st Line of defence for compliance
Liaise with sites to determine site specific permits and licenses and input into compliance obligations register
Develop and maintain the tools for identifying and maintaining HSEC compliance obligations for Teck sites
Work with the HSEC platform owner towards including compliance obligations into compliance library
Partner with diverse functions to determine 1st Line activities required for meeting objectives
Build knowledge base and capacity in Teck for compliance strategy and partner with sites to build compliance maturity
Lead all aspects of consultants as and when required during implementation
Develop internal and external materials required for external assurance for membership and voluntary responsible mining standards requirements, public disclosures for external assurance activities, and performance opportunities and status for senior management
Support external assurance process interviews and on-site activities
Coordinate and input material for external assurance into assurance tool ensuring responsible mining standards are met
Lead requests from external assurance provider on external assurance processes
Lead improvement opportunities identified during external assurance process and conduct quarterly reviews with sites on progress
Lead the close out of improvement opportunities within the 24-month period required by responsible mining standards
Collaborate to include outcomes of external assurance into the annual management review of the sustainability management system
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, or in a related field required. A master’s degree is an asset
Minimum eight years of experience conducting audits and overseeing projects, demonstrating strong analytical and leadership skills
Lead auditor competency or equivalent experience is required
Familiarity with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance Standard and a strong technical understanding of risk management and sustainability risks associated with the mining industry is required
Practical experience in the application of regulatory requirements in the extractive industry with working knowledge of the Acts, Regulations, Permits and Licenses in the jurisdictions where the company operates
Strong digital literacy skills including electronic database management knowledge required
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to exert influence is required
Demonstrated teammate that is process-focused and oriented by results
Ability to travel internationally up to 15% and work at high altitudes

$105,000 - $130,000 a year
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
