The Safewalk Coordinator supports the operations of Safewalk, a free volunteer-operated accompaniment service on campus that ensure students, staff, faculty, and community members arrive safely at their destination. Operating since the 1990s, The University of Alberta Students’ Unions Safewalk Service is one of largest volunteer-based walk-home services in Canada, boasting over 100 dedicated volunteers and operating Monday - Friday night, the Safewalk service will walk you anywhere on North Campus, aswell as Campus Saint-Jean, and we’ll even take the LRT with you!
The Safewalk Coordinator plays an integral role in the operations of the Safewalk service and is responsible alongside the Program lead - Safewalk for the recruitment, interviewing, training, evaluation and (most importantly!) appreciation of Volunteers within the service. This position allows for involvement in volunteer management, event hosting, policy creation, and assessment of the service.
The Coordinator position is a ~10 month position with a planned start date of July 7th 2025 and ending on April 30th 2026. This position works full time at 37.5 hours per week throughout the summer and school year. During the summer months the Coordinator is expected to work standard business hours, while in the school year the Coordinator will work late afternoon through to late evening in order to coincide and assist with Safewalk operations as needed, exact times are flexible dependent on the candidates schedule. Core Duties of the Safewalk Coordinator
Management of the Safewalk Volunteer program including recruitment, training, evaluation, appreciation, and supervision.
If needed, undergo patroller and dispatch training to understand the operations of Safewalk and its radio system.
Ensure Safewalk operations are consistently delivered, including filling both patroller and dispatch shifts if needed.
Facilitate Safewalk Advisory Team meetings and coordinating the senior volunteer team projects and monthly meetings
Assist with development of project plans for Safewalk
Update and organize the volunteer registry, google drive, and scheduling software
Maintain up to date service usage data
Other duties as assigned by the Program Lead - Safewalk
Minimum Qualifications
All applications will be considered but preference will be given to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at the University of Alberta and enrolled in at least one course in each of the fall 2025 and winter 2026 academic terms.
General understanding of the University of Alberta
Eligible to work in Canada (Including students who are in Canada on a study Permit)
The Ability to work on-site at our offices at the University of Alberta’s North Campus.
Availability to work varying hours, including all weekday evening and the occasional weekend during the school year.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience volunteering with Safewalk, or another UASU service such as SustainSU, The Peer Support Centre, Week of Welcome, or Events Crew
Demonstrated ability to effectively employ interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to manage stressful or complex situations
Ability to deal effectively with Students’ Union and University of Alberta Staff Members in a professional and personal manner
Proficiency with Macintosh computers and with Google Drive software
Previous experience volunteering or working with a crisis intervention organization
Previous experience in volunteer management and training
Previous experience in public speaking, facilitation, and training
Previous experience in event planning, management, and logistics
