Position Overview
Reporting to the Data & Analytics Manager, the Data and Insights Analyst strengthens relationships with FMB’s Indigenous clients by translating data into clear, actionable insights. Clients may include First Nations governments and Indigenous organizations. This role will cultivate partnerships among FMB divisions and clients to pinpoint the data and visualization needs that matter most to FMB’s Indigenous clients.
In every engagement this role champions data storytelling and evidence-based decision-making, ensuring insights drive real-world impacts for Indigenous communities. Drawing on client needs, the analyst designs, builds, and refines interactive Power BI dashboards and other data-driven products, managing each project from discovery through deployment while coordinating with other FMB team members.
Accountabilities
Relationship Development
Build trust and maintain ongoing dialogue with Indigenous clients to understand community priorities and ensure data solutions reflect local contexts
Collaborate with members of FMB’s Data & Analytics Committee to develop data tools and visualizations that meet the needs of FMB’s clients
Needs Assessment & Solution Design
Facilitate discovery sessions to gather requirements for dashboards and reports
Translate business questions into data models and intuitive visual designs
Data Visualization & Analysis
Write robust SQL queries to extract and prepare data
Develop, publish, and maintain Power BI Reports (along with other data visualization tools), ensuring accessibility and performance for end-users
Apply statistical or geospatial techniques to uncover patterns and forecast trends
Project and Workflow Management
Create detailed project plans and timelines
Coordinate with members of FMB’s data team and other divisions to establish time budgets for projects
Track progress on client adoption and use of data visualization tools
Capacity Building & Knowledge Sharing
Develop and deliver virtual training sessions for FMB’s clients about using data visualization tools, dashboards, and reports
Host quarterly “lunch-and-learn” sessions for FMB personnel that showcase new dashboards, share lessons learned, and invite feedback from cross-functional teams
Collaborate with FMB’s Capacity Development team to incorporate data literacy modules into FMB’s broader client training offerings
The Data and Insights Analyst may perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the Data & Analytics Manager.
Qualifications
Education: University Degree in data science, computer science, statistics, business, economics, business analytics, or relevant field; a graduate degree in such fields would be an asset.
Experience: Minimum five (5) years in data analysis, business intelligence, or a similar role.
Experience working with Indigenous governments or organizations is preferred.
Technical skills:
Proficient in SQL
Advanced expertise in Power BI development, with strong proficiency in DAX
Working knowledge of at least one additional coding language (e.g., Python, R, Stata, etc.)
Familiarity with Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, and SSMS
Other skills:
Ability to build respectful, collaborative relationships with Indigenous leadership and staff
Excellent written and verbal communication – able to explain technical issues with non-technical audiences
Strong organizational and project-management abilities; comfortable with working on multiple projects and setting priorities
Must be fluent in English (spoken and written); fluency in French an asset
Experience collaborating and communicating with senior leaders in an organization
Experience working in teams with diverse skills and experiences
Must have an understanding, awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture and history
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Working Conditions
This position can be based in West Vancouver, BC, Winnipeg, MB, Ottawa, ON or Montreal QC; remote or hybrid working may be considered.
May require occasional national travel.
