Overview
The Instructor/Lifeguard is responsible for lifeguarding, providing swimming instruction, evaluating skills, supervising participants, and ensuring accident prevention and rescue. This role also includes delivering aquatic leadership programs and examinations (Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross) in accordance with the Lifesaving Society of Canada standards.
Responsibilities
Instructor Duties:
Teach assigned aquatic classes using established methods and procedures, following Red Cross and Lifesaving Society standards.
Screen patrons to determine their water safety level.
Monitor swimmers' activities, ensuring policies, rules, and regulations are followed.
Prepare swimming lesson plans according to established procedures.
Evaluate students' performance, maintain records of attendance, and complete report cards.
Communicate students' progress to parents and caregivers.
Provide CPR and First Aid as needed.
Lifeguard Duties:
Monitor swimmers' activities, ensuring policies, rules, and regulations are followed.
Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards.
Rescue individuals in distress or danger of drowning, providing CPR and First Aid, and using safety/rescue equipment.
Screen patrons to determine their water safety level.
Maintain records and complete required reports.
Perform maintenance duties, including pool chemistry tests and pool fouling cleanup.
Notify supervisors of any accidents, rescues, or issues.
Ensure equipment is operational and stored properly after use.
Conduct routine change room checks and complete opening/closing safety checklists.
Other Duties:
Ensure compliance with Ontario Health Regulations and relevant legislation, as well as Policy and Procedures manuals.
Respond to aquatic emergency situations using safety/rescue equipment.
Participate in special events, water safety programs, emergency procedure training, and other training as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Completion of some high school education
3 months related experience
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Must provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector check at your own expense as a condition of employment
Current Lifesaving Society approved Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C" Certification
Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification
Current Life Saving Society National Lifeguard Certification
Reliable with a good attitude and employment record
