Teaching Qualification Requirements Education Minimum of a Ph.D. in religious studies, or PhD advanced candidacy, and Japanese Language Proficiency; knowledge of Classical Japanese or Kanbun expected. Experience This course provides an in-depth introduction to the religious traditions of Japan from the emerging of the Japanese state to the role of religion in contemporary Japan. Kami worship, the Buddhist tradition, Yin Yang divination, Confucianism, pilgrimage, ritual and the modern construct of Shinto are addressed in an interdisciplinary approach, taking into account insights from the fields of History, Literature, and Art. The candidate should have research and first-hand experience of these traditions and topics. Other The candidate should be able to demonstrate a research emphasis on pre-modern Japanese religions (the focus of the course), in particular ritual developments, cultic sites and pilgrimages. In addition to pre-modern developments, familiarity with modern Japanese society and research experience in Japan is highly desired.
