Fall 2025 Posting Period: June 1-15 Course Lecturer: INFS 635 - Computer Programming for Information Professionals (3 credits) McGill’s School of Information Studies Master’s program (https://www.mcgill.ca/sis/home) is seeking a Course Lecturer to teach INFS 635: Computer Programming for Information Professionals. Course Overview This course introduces the fundamentals of computer programming, with a focus on the application of these techniques to the domain of information science. Topics will include software principles and practices, programming concepts and techniques, data structures, and algorithms. This course is oriented towards those with no prior programming experience. Those with modest prior experience are welcome to join the class but are asked to be mindful that the class will be paced towards the novice learner. Those with more substantive past programming experience or who are eager for a more intensive dive into the topic may find other independent learning opportunities more appropriately paced to their learning needs (e.g., INFS 689). Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students should be able to: Use and understand terminology relevant to programming and data representation Implement simple algorithms relevant to information studies, including text manipulation Connect concepts and techniques taught in the course to work and careers in the field of information studies. Teaching Qualifications The course lecturer should have successfully completed courses in software development or computing at the graduate level. The lecturer must have at least two years’ experience in software development. The candidate will have had taught a course in computer programming for non-computer science majors. Candidate should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness as shown by course evaluations. A Master’s degree is required. Please note the Faculty of Arts has standardized Course Lecturer contract start and end dates: they will be different than the course start and end dates (see Workday Posting for more details). Salary will be commensurate with the salary scale for Course Lecturers, as described in the McGill Course Lecturers and Instructors Union Collective Agreement.
