Position Summary
Job Type: Temporary Full-Time Summer position available
Reporting to: Recreation Manager
Department: Community Services - Recreation
Hours of Work: 40 hours a week. Monday – Friday.
** Varied hours between 8 am – 10 pm including some evenings between June 23 – August 27.

Our Recreation department is currently seeking a motivated individual who is passionate about working with their community to join the team as Recreation Leader for youth 13-18 years of age.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to Citizens, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.
Responsibilities Include:
Build & maintain effective relationships with ?i?uy (children) and other community contacts
Assist Recreation Coordinator with planning and scheduling indoor and outdoor camp activities
Assist in the supervision of Summer Camp Recreation Workers
Prepare and lead a variety of activities daily in our Summer Day Camp program
Assists with evaluating program content and participant satisfaction.
Resolve conflicts and situations involving program participants
Engage ?i?uy’s (children’s) participation in summer camp activities & events
Develop open communication with ?i?uys’ (childrens’)parents & guardians regarding their participation in Summer Camp
Provides high quality customer service
Enforce departmental policies and procedures while ensuring required standards of behavior, safety and security are maintained
Create print & digital media promotional information for programs & services
Some records keeping and preparation of reports related to activities and inventory
Performs related work as required
Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience:
Completion of a two-year Community Recreation or Education program from a recognized post-secondary school and
Responsible Adult Certification
1-2 years’ experience in working with children and youth in recreation, arts, and culture programming
Desired, knowledge and/or education in Indigenous culture and worldviews as it is applied to Child and Youth Development e.g. Education, Family and Child Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Services and Health
An original Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check.
Sound knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint)
A valid First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate – Level C are required
A Class 5 Unrestricted Driver’s License and acceptable Drivers Abstract
A Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is ideal.
Additional training such as High Five Principles, Physical Literacy, National Coaching Certification Program, Professional Development Program, or Early Childhood Education certification would also be considered assets
Skills and Abilities:
Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain working relationships with ?i?uy (children) and other community agencies & contacts
Ability to organize and promote summer camp programs for ?i?uy (children)
Experience working with at-risk ?i?uy (children) and youth
Sound knowledge of Tla’amin culture, community, and language is an asset
Experience and comfort facilitating groups
Knowledge of ?i?uy (children) social interests and of various recreational activities such as games, sports, arts & summer programming
Understanding of the wellness and healing capacities of Indigenous cultural resiliency and resurgence
Knowledge of community youth resources and able to connect ?i?uy (children) to appropriate resources as needed
Ability to manage conflict in a way that is respectful and ethical
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at ayis? ?aye (Cousin's House) or dependant on programming, at other locations in qathet or in the City of Powell River.
