Job Summary To coordinate and manage research activities for the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Pediatrics. Organizational Status Position to whom this person reports: Dr. Lori Tucker, Division Head (for overall function); Dr. Jaime Guzman, for management of a group of related research studies in the area of childhood arthritis. The individual will work closely with Dr. David Cabral who is the Division Research Manager. In addition, they may work with any of the Division members involved in the Rheumatology research program, including physicians, allied health professionals, laboratory technicians, research coordinators, research assistants, undergraduate co-op students, post-graduate students working on specific projects, collaborators, and divisional clerical support staff. Contacts (internal and external to the University): Institutional Review Board (UBC) and Hospital Research Review Committee (C&W), finance departments at UBC, BCCHR, CRSU, and PHSA, other individuals who are working in equivalent research positions either in the institution or in other institutions who are research collaborators, patients and parents of patients involved in research studies. Shared office space in the Division of Rheumatology, Ambulatory Care Building, BC Children's Hospital. Desktop computer and telephone access available. Flexibility in work hours may be required. Work Performed The successful candidate will be an active participant in the clinical research activities of the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Pediatrics. This includes studies conducted within the Division as well as national and international collaborative network studies in which Division members are involved. They will work closely with the Division Research Coordinator and other research staff, as well as the clinical team. Tasks: The primary responsibility of this individual is management of a suite of research projects that are national in scope, involving children with juvenile arthritis. This requires development of project timelines, supervision of research assistants to do study enrollments and visits, overseeing data entry, communication with study sites across Canada and maintenance of required grant financial records and regulatory documents. The individual will be responsible for preparation of study documents including ethical submissions, regulatory documents and hospital research approvals; supervise trainees to submit IRB documents for studies; maintain accurate records of IRB approvals, submit renewals and amendments as required. The individual will also work with the other research coordinator and Division research manager in the development of implementation plans for the new studies taken on by Division members, determining allocation of research staff research assistants, setting priorities and timelines, training and supervising research assistants/staff involved in direct study recruitment, data collection and data entry. They will participate in hiring and supervision of research assistants and/or undergraduate co-op students to carry out research studies in the clinics, which involves student evaluation and assisting them with required study projects. Other tasks included in this position may include: Design and develop study data collection forms for implementation on REDCap Review expenditures and purchases, reconciles invoices, maintenance of financial reports and budgeting of finances for the different research projects. Contribute to grant submissions by revising applications, comparing materials to grant guidelines, contacting co-investigators, collecting documents, tracking deadlines, completing research project information forms, and obtaining signatures. Coordination, scheduling, and management of research-related meetings with local, national, and international individuals/groups Participate in organizing research review meetings for the Division on a monthly basis, or more frequently as needed, as well as presenting research progress and results at these meetings. Consequence of Error/Judgement Accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgment are required to maximize effectiveness of the research program. The individual will need to exercise independent judgment, and feel comfortable working with a large and diverse team including physicians, nurses, allied health personnel, trainees, and secretaries. Exercising poor judgment and lack of appropriate consultation with other team members can adversely affect the productivity of the Divisional research program, and might lead to concerns about research credibility or compromise the team’s ability to secure funding for future projects or engage in multi-site projects. Supervision Received The individual will work independently under the directions of the Division Head, main Principal Investigator, and Research Manager. Supervision Given The individual will work in collaboration with the Research Manager to provide supervision and guidance to research assistants, undergraduate co-op students, volunteers and other collaborators in the group. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a health or science discipline or equivalent is the minimal requirement. Experience in clinical research, as coordinator, administrator, or research assistant or the equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Recent experience in a university or research establishment environment is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Ability to develop and work with large clinical (e. g. registry data), research or administrative databases. Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet searches at an advanced level; experience with REDCap is an asset. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and the ability to participate in a collegial manner with the team, including supervisory experience. Effective critical thinking skills and understanding of complex data management principles. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments.
