Centrica Power is a leading energy infrastructure company in the UK and Irish market with energy assets across conventional and flexible generation, renewable energy and energy storage. Within the current UK & Ireland portfolio, there is c.£2bn gross capital deployed, over 600MW in operation and a further 500MW in construction. The vision is to be a world leading flexible power asset business that energises a greener, fairer future and delivers material growth for the Centrica Group and in turn, superior shareholder returns. This is coupled with aspirations to spend close to £3.bn over the next 5 years, in aid of Centrica’s green investment growth strategy and continuing to build a Power business unit of materiality and significance in Centrica’s overall growth plan. Therefore, we are looking for a world-class Technical Director who will form part of the Centrica Power Leadership Team and provide strategic and technical leadership to our business. The Technical Director will be responsible for overseeing technical due diligence at the business development stage of investment in power generation assets, as well as defining the strategic agenda on future technology investments for Centrica Power. They will provide technical thought leadership on Power assets to a diverse group of stakeholders, and collaborate with external partners to bring external perspectives into the group and shape innovation opportunities. This is a critical role in enabling and building a Power business unit of materiality and significance in Centrica’s overall performance and growth plans. The role can be located out of any of our UK and Ireland offices with a requirement to travel to other offices, operational sites and stakeholder locations. Key Accountabilities: Leadership: Enterprise Leadership: Drive a commercial mindset for the development and execution of the Centrica Power engineering/ technical strategy, to ensure that operational vulnerabilities in the business are appropriately managed, support remediation where required and advise on technical progression. The role will be responsible for contributing and shaping the business strategy, by scoping opportunities on innovative and frontier technologies World Class Delivery: Ensure the Technical standard and diligence are aligned/ adhered to, to deliver the Centrica Power strategic objectives Culture Development: Leadership advocacy for Centrica’s key behaviours of; encouraging a culture of one team, ownership and growth mindset, inspiring and motivating the wider team to achieve outstanding results Cross-Group Stakeholder Engagement: Develop solid relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to drive performance improvement, particularly with the Development Director to ensure appropriate support and delivery on key projects. Technical – Subject Matter Expert Technical Leadership: Lead and communicate the technical vision and strategy of Centrica Power to key internal stakeholders and to third parties, where required. This includes determining the appropriate technical standards for Power assets Technical Oversight: Provide technical direction on complex power system designs, upgrades, and integrations. In addition to reviewing and approving critical engineering deliverables, including FEED, EPC scopes, and technical standards. This also includes providing technical support to the Development Team to ensure appropriate technical specifications and standards are applied through the procurement process. Additionally, support the operations team through the asset life cycle to ensure standards are maintained and technical improvements considered Robust Technical Governance: Ensure robust governance is in place, particularly in relation to technical due diligence in the business development stage (acquisition projects), supporting good/safe business decisions, based on sound commercial evaluation Compliance: Oversee all engineering/ technical decisions during the business development stage (inc. new innovations), ensuring alignment with the business and commercial strategy, and regulatory compliance. This also includes engagement with external parties as Centrica’s representative on standard development, technical policies and consultation responses Risk Management: Drive risk management, technical troubleshooting, and issue resolution across projects Data Management: Ensure information systems are operated to the required standard to maintain accurate and secure records relating to engineering design. Championing emerging Technology (Innovation, new technologies and external representation/influence) Drive innovation: Promote and encourage a growth mindset with regards to innovative and frontier technology, that places Centrica Power as the leading player in the UK & Ireland renewable energy and energy storage Markets, supporting our Net Zero ambitions Market Scanning: Takes a broad perspective, looking within and externally, to encourage and develop new and innovative ideas to drive the business forward, aligned to the business purpose. Undertake regular market analysis and advise the business of new or improved technical solutions and opportunities Undertake assessments of new technologies and energy market opportunities – SMR, flow batteries etc Technical diligence: Ideate and sign-off technical strategies for new technologies and asset classes, through analysing potential opportunities, technical risks of new business ventures and establishing a risk assessment with preventative measures Future investment Cases: You will support major investment bids and programmes where specialist knowledge, insight and due diligence is required External Stakeholder Engagement: Utilising your existing network, you will seek opportunities for new frontier technologies to build a future pipeline of projects. Here’s what we’re looking for: Significant experience within industrial and renewable power sectors, with experience in senior leadership roles in engineering and technical disciplines Highly delivery focused, ability to meet emerging and future business needs, to deliver value and technical discipline Experience of interacting with key functions such as M&A Team to validate opportunities with technical expertise Ability to manage ambiguity, complexity and conflicting demands Demonstrable experience of applying a growth mindset to deliver significant and sustainable improvements in business performance, and revenue enhancement Ability to operate and drive opportunities to work as ‘one team’ with the broader Centrica Group, establishing clear ‘ownership’ Evidence of applying a commercial mindset to an operational environment Evidence of embracing technology as an enabler to maximise value from assets and drive robust data management.
