Key Responsibilities:
Meets, one-on-one, with students whose scores place them in a foundations level before the student leaves the Assessment Centre, explains the reason for the placement and encourages reluctant students to accept the placement.
Advise declined applicants on their Admission results and provide options available as to their next steps.
Does in-person advising for General English-Continuing Education students and provides written documentation to allow students to enrol in the appropriate English course.
Emails all students advised and records daily documentation of each student advised, including BANNER entry for some students and scheduling of those eligible for automatic rewrites.
Answers questions by phone, email, online and in person regarding testing, test outcomes, admission decisions, etc. and directs callers to appropriate Departments if unable to answer a particular query whose answer is not within the purview of Assessment Services.
Provides test results to students. These students are required to meet in person with the incumbent so that the results can be interpreted accurately to the test-takers. Frequently, this requires detailed explanations of results, purpose of tests, and score interpretation.
Assists in placement/admission testing sessions throughout the year. This involves double checking tests being taken and verifying students/applicants information on BANNER for rewrites, admission, or placement testing eligibility. Setting students up on the appropriate placement/admission test and when required creates one-off test vouchers, both online and in person.
Coordinates, administers, and evaluates Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Tests to ESL students and applicants both in groups and individually as required by the test and assessing skill-levels against the CLB rubrics. This includes group invigilation and assessment for reading and writing skills and individual assessment for oral and aural skills.
Other duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
Three-year diploma/degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in English.
English as a Second Language Teaching Certificate and CLBPT Certification is required.
Minimum of five (5) years’ cumulative experience teaching English and/or English as a second language in an academic environment. At least 6 months of on-the-job training to get up to speed and working independently in the position.
