YOUR OPPORTUNITY
Under general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, the Manager, Academic HR is responsible for the strategic management, oversight and administration of the full range of academic human resource (HR) services at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE). The incumbent is expected to function as a key representative between faculty and senior administrators in the Office of the Dean at FASE and the Offices of the Vice-President and Provost, the Vice-Provost, Faculty and Academic Life, and the Vice- President Human Resources and Equity at the University of Toronto.
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the administration of academic HR is carried out accurately and consistently across all FASE academic departments by providing ongoing relevant FASE wide training on the interpretation and application of academic policies and procedures as they pertain to academic searches, appointments, promotions, tenure, leaves, salary administration and retirement options in order to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. The incumbent functions as the key liaison regarding academic human resource matters connecting the Dean’s Office with the academic units across FASE.
In addition, the incumbent oversees human resource service delivery to academic-focused staff groups in each of the CUPE 3902 Units 3 and 5 collective agreements. They are expected to maintain comprehensive knowledge of the collective agreements to ensure the Dean, CAO, and departmental contacts are provided with accurate information and sound advice regarding the management of all aspects of the collective agreements for Sessional Lecturers and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The incumbent will assume responsibility for new projects and undertake research on a wide variety of issues and topics related to the responsibilities of this position, which will continuously evolve. They must be flexible and willing to respond without delay to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a dynamic environment.
The incumbent is responsible for the creation of documents, briefing notes and guidelines related to the development of procedures. Assists with the creation of academic staff complement plan and initiatives to address past, current and future needs and challenges. Advises on the use and/or interpretation of University policies, practices and procedures in relation to the appointment, salary administration and employment relationship of academic staff.
The incumbent is required to use initiative, strong judgement and analytical skills for expert decision making and handling inquiries independently or referring them appropriately. As a representative of the Office of the Dean and CAO the incumbent is required to exercise a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
EDUCATION:
University degree in a relevant field of study required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years of related experience; knowledge of University of Toronto structure; deep familiarity with academic HR life cycle, tenure process, and University academic HR norms.
Excellent knowledge of the University’s academic policies and practices as they pertain to full- time and part-time academic searches, appointments, tenure, promotions, leaves and salary administration; sound knowledge of collective agreement interpretation and administration; experience supervising staff and organizing/co-delivering workshops/training sessions for academic and administrative staff.
SKILLS:
Strong computer skills and demonstrated proficiency with various software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and database management.
