CityHousing Hamilton provides affordable housing that is safe, well-maintained, cost effective and supports the diverse needs of our many communities. Reporting to the Supervisor, Pest Control, the Exterminator will treat identified units for pest problems through an integrated pest management approach.
GENERAL DUTIES
Participates in the control of structural pests such as bed bugs, mice, ants, and cockroaches in alignment with Ministry of the Environment Guidelines and regulations.
Determines pest harbourage sites and infestation levels; applies appropriate pest management techniques.
Neutralize pests through control measures such as pesticide application, vacuuming, steaming, baiting and trapping.
Uses baiting and other appropriate techniques to control rodent pests.
Maintains record sheets of pesticides used and types of pests encountered.
Reads label directions, mixes and applies the appropriate pesticides in alignment with environmental requirements. Calibrates sprayers to ensure the proper rate of application; performs minor maintenance on equipment.
Responsible for the strict observance of safety regulations, environmental requirements, and use standards in accordance with The Pesticides Act.
Ensures safe application of pesticides at CityHousing Hamilton sites.
Attends to scheduled appointments as directed by scheduling software, and/or dispatcher.
Completes work orders and all required documentation.
Liaises with Pest Control Prep Crew depending on needs of treatment.
Complies with rules of entry in alignment with the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006.
Liaises with Supervisor on more complex issues.
Responsible for the safe storage, transport, and use of pesticides in the integrated pest management approach. Transports all tools and chemicals by driving company vehicle.
Exercises sound judgement in determining required IPM techniques.
Advises tenants on pest prevention techniques.
May be required to utilize tact and diplomacy in possible tenant interactions where complex health and social issues may be present. Refers tenants to other staff as appropriate.
Provides Sensational Service in alignment with the Corporate Culture Pillars of the City of Hamilton, and mission, vision, and values of CityHousing Hamilton.
Works in accordance with the provisions of applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
Performs other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of pests, including but not limited to, bedbugs, cockroaches, ants and mice, and how to properly identify a residential infestation. A valid Ontario Exterminator’s Licence (structural) in accordance with the Pest Control Products Act is mandatory.
Knowledge of managing pest problems through an integrated pest management approach, including environmental protection and demonstrated ability to read pesticide labels. Two to three years of practical experience in the pest control industry required.
Completion of High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Additional courses in pest management considered an asset
Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, Housing Services Act, 2011, Pesticide Act and Ontario Regulation 63/09.
Experience in a computerized environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office XP (Word, Excel and Outlook). Experience with Northgate and/or Kirona considered an asset.
Ability to work well with the public and ability to adopt a customer perspective. Previous Social Housing experience and/or experience working with clients with special needs and/or mental health challenges considered an asset.
Strong interpersonal, communication, time management and organizational skills. Thrive in a minimally supervised environment.
Possess a driving record deemed satisfactory by the Employer at the time of hire and a valid driver’s licence, Class ‘G’ minimum requirement. (Candidate’s must provide a recent copy of a driver abstract upon request. Driver abstracts cannot be older than 14 days upon submission.)
Demonstrated ability to operate tools and equipment in a safe manner.
Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, pull, push bend, reach, grip, step, walk, drive, twist, climb, squat and carry objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
