General Description of Class
Under general direction, may act as a lead hand of a group of technicians or a specialist in the performance of non-surgical animal care.
Typical Duties
The following illustrative duties indicate the extent of skill and the level of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.
- performs routine animal husbandry involving choice and preparation of appropriate housing environment and nutrition, monitors health status.
- directs and instructs junior laboratory animal technicians;
- wears personal protective equipment as appropriate;
- maintains records of animals such as diets and health histories;
- may perform the duties of a Laboratory Animal Technician II;
- may drive and operate a motorized vehicle used for transporting animals and supplies; loads and unloads contents of vehicle and;
- other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements for Selection
Education: Is a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Three years of related working experience.
Other: Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
