Consider this unique opportunity to work closely with a City of Edmonton Ward Councillor. You will work to further the objectives of the office in an ever-changing and fast-paced work environment. You will exercise considerable judgment, independence, and initiative, ensuring the variety of demands that arise in the Councillor’s office are handled appropriately. A strong understanding of municipal governance and excellent research and analytical skills are essential.
This posting is intended to be used to fill multiple roles of different classifications within different Council offices. As each Councillor may be seeking different specific skill sets, please provide a cover letter in addition to your resume and be sure you illustrate your knowledge, abilities, skills, experience and interest in this area.
Responsibilities may include:
Constituent Interaction: Handling inquiries and concerns from public members, whether via phone, email, or in person. This may include providing information, directing requests, following up on issues and organizing special events.
Communication and Information Management: researching, summarizing, and synthesizing information to create or manage correspondence, reports, briefing materials and ward communications. This may include duties from requesting information from senior City management to managing social media.
Administrative Support: scheduling, coordinating events, and managing information including maintaining ward and city records.
Working in a Politically Sensitive Environment: Awareness of the political context of the work is required. This role must handle situations with tact, diplomacy and discretion, interact with diverse groups such as constituents, City employees and other parties in a professional and respectful manner, and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information appropriately.
Completion of a related post-secondary diploma or degree
Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in an administrative role, preferably in a rapid paced, complex, and politically sensitive work environment
The type of program and related experience required will differ for each Councillor so please be sure to effectively highlight your training and experience
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for all roles. This includes the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse individuals, including constituents, City employees, and other groups. This will enable the successful candidate to summarize reports and other materials and compose effective and accurate correspondence
All positions require strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to handle conflict and demonstrate effective listening. This will allow the successful candidate to effectively respond to members of the public and maintain relationships with departments, branches, and outside groups or agencies
Strong organizational skills are necessary for managing schedules, coordinating events, and maintaining records
Proficiency in operating various computer programs and software applications is required for all roles. These roles use the Google Suite of programs, as well as an internal information management system (POSSE) and may also include other custom software including Adobe
All roles require the ability to work independently and exercise initiative while adhering to established policies and objectives
A general understanding of municipal governance, the City of Edmonton departments, and civic issues is beneficial for all positions. This will enable the successful candidate to recognize politically sensitive issues and bring matters of priority to the Councillor's attention

The available classifications include: Executive Assistant, Senior Council Assistant, Council Assistant, and Communications -Social Media Advisor. The level of responsibility and complexity of these roles differ with a general progression from Council Assistant who completes work within established processes to Executive Assistant who may have some supervisory responsibilities. The Communications - Social Media Advisor is a specialized role which requires specific skills in graphic design and social media.
