Job Summary: Designs set-ups and conducts experimental programs and accurately obtains and records data; fabricates experimental apparatus. Performs R&D assignments that are not standardized or prescribed. May make modifications to experimental set-ups, troubleshoot, and correct equipment malfunctions as necessary, and provide oral and written status reports. Main function is to test products to the given Standards. Responsibilities: Maintains good housekeeping, taking care of safety and using PPE at all times as outlined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA). Conducts a wide range of test procedures on equipment to the applicable standards and interprets results of the test. Determines and reviews which tests are required; the order in which to perform tests and the number of samples required. Performs tests and calculations, compiles data and summarizes test results into test reports and checklists. Verifies calculations are consistent with results of measurements. Determines whether product passes or fails subject to review by Certifier/Reviewer. Assembles and disassembles test samples, hooks-up laboratory test equipment in preparation for testing; operates most laboratory test equipment without supervision. Maintains good housekeeping of tools, equipment and work area following tests and carry out assigned laboratory clean-up duties. Records technical data, draft reports. Performs mathematical calculations required to summarize test results as applicable. Relates test results to product specifications. Acts as a liaison with other departments as required by Lab Manager. Notes and records discrepancies or characteristics of products which may appear before or during the tests and refer them to Sr. Lab Tech, Certifier or Manager. Completion of Work Orders to ensure projects can be closed; timely completion of Work Orders to improve customer loyalty. Provides analysis for failed test results to certifiers. Independently analyzes complex devices and equipment to determine compliance to applicable requirements. Contributes to the development and implementation of requirements for new and/or revised standards as required. Interacts with the Certifier to plan activities, exchange information, review and approve lab reports and certification records. Maintains and initiates direct Certifier contact to provide information and answer questions or obtains more product information. Tests to the Certifier’s requests and provides general and specific information about the certification testing process or status of a work order to assist the Certifier and improve overall customer service and satisfaction. Provides Certifier with detailed interpretation of test results and construction evaluation and how it applies to the status of their certification. Performs witness testing as required by Lab Tech III or Manager. Knowledge on how to operate test equipment in a sage manner. May be required to purchase tools/equipment from outside shops. Performs other duties as assigned by manager. Reviews work orders for accuracy. Conducts Technical Audits for Safety. Communicates with clients regarding project details. Work Environment: Needs to be knowledgeable of safe practices; ability to move equipment around with assistance or independently; follow safety practices; ability to interact with internal customers as well as external; ability to use a variety of equipment to perform daily tasks. May be asked to perform overtime duties to achieve project deadlines. Periods of strenuous activity may be present. Lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, stretching overextending. Potential for working in extreme temperatures (Environmental Test Chambers) Works indoors and outdoors as needed May be required to lift up to 50lbs Education & Experience: 3-year Technical Certificate or equivalent education and experience or Associate’s degree in engineering technology, preferably in electrical or related field Professional Membership e.g. ASTT, OACETT or equivalent 5-8 years of related experience Experience with IP and Type environment testing Gas detectors and gas detection performance testing Familiarity with standards; CSA/UL/IEC 61010-1, CSA/UL/IEC 60079 series, CSA 94.2, UL 50E, IEC 60529 CSA Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
