The Vancouver Convention Centre is seeking an emotionally intelligent leader and a strong communicator to be our next Director, Safety & Security. In this pivotal role, you will create a safety and security strategy that is culturally responsive reflecting the diversity of our team members, our guests and local community. The Director, Safety & Security is a senior leadership role responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing all safety and security protocols for the organization’s events and operations. The Director will be responsible for safeguarding our guests, team members and our assets in downtown Vancouver.
Leading a team of talented individuals, this role ensures a welcoming and secure environment for attendees, guests, team members, suppliers and clients through strategic planning, risk assessment and the coordination of event safety and security measures.
An experienced, proactive and innovative professional, the Director, Safety and Security is detail orientated and experienced in managing complex safety and security operations in a high-volume, high-profile event setting.
The Director acts as the company liaison on all security and event safety including crowd control and public demonstrations as they relate to our business, events, tenants and other stakeholders such as City of Vancouver, Vancouver Fire Department and the Vancouver Police Department.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Responsible for the oversight and implementation of all strategies and operational policies and practices related to Safety and Security.
Works in collaboration with our Supplier partners, mainly the security contract, and develops, establishes, and maintains safety and security policies and procedures for VCC during and outside of scheduled events.
Provides direction in the development of safety policies and procedures to support a reduced risk environment, and pro-actively identifies security and event safety topics and ensures adequate measures and controls are in place to drive business continuity, client service and overall safety and security results.
Partners with all PavCo departments to ensure a welcoming environment is prioritized, and people movement and plans are representative of the centre’s goals and objectives and that our team’s function collaboratively.
Participates in the hiring, training and ongoing coaching and mentoring of department staff. Provides leadership, direction, and day-to-day management to a team of Operational team members.
Ensures all events are reviewed from a risk perspective and collaborates closely with external consultants on risk when required.
Maintains and communicates of all emergency-related policy and procedures (fire, medical, earthquake, bomb threat, etc.).
Oversees Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery Programs.
?Engages in data-driven decision-making to advise on incidents, including a focus on incident analysis to ensure continued oversight of ongoing security concerns and challenges, and the ability to take proactive measures.
?Works with Event Managers and clients in developing tailored security plans for individual events.
?Establishes and maintains professional and collaborative relationships with law enforcement agencies, including the Vancouver Police Department, to ensure adequate policing and security outside the facility, adjusting to scope and type of event.
Develops, delivers, maintains, and monitors security controls to align with best practices, policies, and standards of security-related systems (CCTV, radio, key lock system, fire panel, etc.).
Reviews security reports, responding to critical incidents, and notifying appropriate VCC and SHS members.
Manages the security contract with supplier partner and ensures staffing level and placements as required by event contract.
Conducts site inspections prior and during events to monitor risk and adherence of policies and procedures.
Oversees the Centres 7/24 Operations Room logistics, policies, and protocols, as well as liaising with the Engineering department as appropriate.
Manages annual operating budget for Safety and Security.
Provides and assigns access, makes changes to existing access control levels, oversees ID card security levels.
Issues and tracks all building/office keys including keys issued to employees, contractors, and all other external stakeholders.
Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
Completion of post-secondary education and training in Security, Law Enforcement, or Building Operations, or equivalent combination of training, knowledge, and experience.
A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in community safety, emergency management, security services, or a related field.
Experience in managing safety and security in a large facility as well as event security, business continuity planning, public threat management and risk management.
Proven experience in a senior leadership role, guiding and supporting a diverse team of direct reports.
Demonstrated ability to develop/manage budgets and oversee and allocate fiscal resources.
Possess excellent interpersonal communication, written, customer service and problem-solving skills, in dealing with guests, clients, employees, contractors and external organizations.
Political and organizational sensitivity.
Skill at developing effective partnerships, negotiating contracts/agreements, and resolving conflict.
Track record of leading high-performing teams through motivation, clear direction, and a strong sense of purpose.
Ability to recognize emergency situations and direct prompt and effective corrective measures.
Develop, augment, implement and maintain industry best practices, rules, policies, and procedures.
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, render thoughtful decisions, and motivate others to levels of excellence.
Sound working knowledge of a wide variety of standard software applications, internet communications and research including Momentus (EBMS), and Microsoft Office.
Knowledge on building safety codes, ingress and egress plans and related event safety protocols
Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with event safety regulations including familiarity with WorkSafe BC.
The salary range for this position is $117,560 - $146,950
Offers will be in line with PavCo’s internal pay equity and qualified candidate’s experience and education.
