This role is a dynamic blend of skilled equipment operation and crew leadership. In the summer, you'll operate a variety of equipment, performing essential maintenance to our urban forest. During the winter, you'll step into a leadership role, overseeing crews engaged in snow and ice control operations across the city. You'll be responsible for ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards, while also providing guidance, training, and support to your team. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions and priorities.
What will you do?
Winter Snow and Ice Season:
Direct and supervise field staff daily, providing feedback and contributing to performance evaluations
Coach and mentor crew members, fostering a culture of growth and development
Promote and ensure a safe work environment, including conducting hazard assessments and enforcing safety standards
Lead crews to various job sites, assessing conditions, and implementing traffic control and safety measures
Participate in manual labour and provide work direction to ensure quality and productivity standards are met
Oversee the training, scheduling, and deployment of personnel in compliance with OH&S Alberta and City Standards
Maintain accurate manual and electronic records and reports related to activities, materials, staff, and equipment
Support the supervisor with tasks such as scheduling, handling 311 notifications, and SAP data entry
Communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators, including citizens
Summer Season with Urban Forestry at Old Man Creek Nursery:
Operate and maintain a range of forestry equipment such as, tractors, skid steers, track loaders and heavy-duty trucks and trailers
Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs) and provide feedback for improvements.
Maintain documentation and records of work completed and equipment used, and complete daily time entry
Participate in safety activities and contribute to continued safety and productivity improvements
Grade 12 supplemented by supervisory experience/training
A minimum of 3 years of experience with Forestry and/or Snow and Ice Operations, including the operation of all associated vehicles and equipment
Skid Steer/Front-end loader certificate, stump grinder training, and tractor training
City of Edmonton Class D Driver’s Permit or ability to obtain within 30 days
Ground Disturbance 2
WHMIS Training, Emergency First Aid Certificate, Chainsaw Training
Assets:
2 years of experience in Urban Forestry
Experience with SAP, Google Suite, and other relevant software programs (e.g., Davey Tree Keeper, LMS, SDMS)
Skills required for success:
Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing and maintaining equipment
Considerable knowledge of safe equipment operation and occupational hazards
Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a conciliatory and sensitive manner
Ability to plan, schedule, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including employee mentoring and training, conflict resolution, and building common understanding
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Computer literacy
Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform the work
Ability to complete task cards, work records, and interpret work assignments

Conditions of Employment:
This position requires working in inclement weather
The work involves heavy physical effort, including lifting up to 100 lbs
Exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation, dust, noise, vibrations, and various mechanical/electrical hazards
May involve working alone or shift work
Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business use auto insurance
Work Environment:
You will be working primarily outdoors in varied environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and dusty conditions. The role involves significant physical demands and exposure to typical roadway and forestry work hazards. You will be part of a dedicated team, often leading crews at various job sites across the city. Equipment Operator II: $34.510 (Hourly); $72,056.880 (Annually)
