Position Summary

The Health & Safety Advisor plays a key role in promoting a workplace culture of safety at Tla’amin. This position provides expert guidance, support, and coordination of occupational health and safety (OHS) programs, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and fostering a safe work environment for all employees, contractors, and community members that is rooted in collective well-being. The role is both strategic and hands-on, supporting a range of departments and varied work across the Nation.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Human Resources Director. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to employees, clients, citizens and general matters of the Nation.
Occupational Health and Safety Program
Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive occupational health and safety program and safety management system that encompasses the diverse work of the Nation, with the support of external consultants as required.
Fosters a pro-active culture of safety and wellness through employee engagement, management support and ongoing communication.
Works collaboratively to develop, implement and maintain safety policies, procedures and safe work practices.
Monitors compliance with the Canada Labour Code, Part II and other applicable federal and provincial health and safety regulations and standards.
Provides practical support to departments in meeting safety requirements, including fieldwork and construction safety.
Participates in pre-construction and project planning meetings to embed safety protocols.
Collaborates with the Fire Department and Emergency Services on emergency preparedness and response programs as they relate to workplace and employee safety.
Builds and maintains strong relationships with employees and managers, demonstrating respect, cultural awareness and collaboration.
Works with Department Managers and Project Managers to ensure contractors are registered with WorkSafe BC and have appropriate safety programs in place. Reviews contractor safety programs and provides oversite as required to ensure compliance.
Incident Prevention and Response
Conducts regular workplace inspections and risk assessments, identifying hazards and ensures effective implementation of recommended control measures.
Conducts safety assessments of field operations including forestry and other land-based operations, marine and construction operations.
Leads investigations of workplace incidents and near-misses; identifies root causes and corrective actions. Ensures all appropriate documentation is accurately completed, submitted and action items are implemented in a timely manner.
Maintains confidentiality and sensitivity when responding to incidents.
Maintains incident reports and safety documentation in accordance with legislative requirements.
Manages WorkSafe claims end-to-end, in consultation with the HR Team.
Training and Awareness
Delivers or coordinates safety training and orientation for new hires (e.g., WHMIS, First Aid, PPE, field safety etc.).
Works with the HR Director and Skills & Training Coordinator to coordinate ongoing safety training for employees and safety committees.
Develops safety awareness materials and promotes health and safety best practices across the organization.
Health and Safety Committee(s)
Acts as a resource to the kwunetagilšt (we take care of each other) Health & Safety (KH&S) Committee and the Safety and Health committee at Tla’amin Health. Provides support including reports, advice and research.
Serves as a regular member of the Nation’s KH&S Committee.
Assists departments in ensuring committee recommendations are actioned.
Health and Wellness Integration
Works with the Human Resources Director and HR team on initiatives that integrate health, wellness, and return-to-work practices.
Monitors trends in workplace injuries and illnesses and recommends preventative strategies.
Coordinates workplace health initiatives, including hearing tests and vaccinations.
Ensures workplace safety and wellness practices reflect Tla’amin’s commitment to community wellness.
Administration
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and emerging best practices.
Maintains tracking for incidents, first aid, safety training and other OH&S requirements.
Supports the KH&S committee and works with the co-chairs to set meeting agendas and record meeting minutes.
Prepares reports as required.
Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience
Post-secondary Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. A CRSP (Certified Registered Safety Professional) designation is preferred.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an OH&S role, preferably in a diverse workplace including office, field (including remote locations on land and water), and/or construction settings.
Experience developing workplace safety programs and systems.
Experience working with Indigenous governments or communities is a strong asset.
Valid BC driver’s license, acceptable driver’s abstract and ability to travel within Tla’amin territory as required.
Acceptable Police Information Check.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Strong knowledge of Canada Labour Code Part II and WorkSafe BC legislation and safety management systems.
Ability to conduct inspections, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach and influence.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety-related reporting tools.
Well-developed writing skills.
Respect for and a commitment to learn about Tla’amin culture and traditions.
Working Conditions
Combination of office and field environments including site visits within Tla’amin territory.
