Reporting to Director Strategic Planning, the Manager Mine Planning, North
America, Technical & Planning is responsible forleadingmine planning activities
for Highland Valley Copper (HVC), Red Dog Operations (RDO), and development
projects in the North America region.
The Strategic Planning North America team, a part of the broader Technical and
Planning team, comprises professionals in geoscience, mine planning and mineral
processing. The team’s objective is to deliver on Teck’s strategy through
optimizing long-term plans for assets in the operating or project phase,
identifying future opportunities and risks by using the core technical fields of
geological and resource modelling, mine planning and metallurgical modelling.
Collaborating with each site’s operating team, the role is accountable for
delivering on annual Life of Mine (LOM) plans and, as required, Resource
Development Planning (RDP) processes. The individual will identify and build
value creation opportunities throughout the Annual Planning Cycle, and provide
leadership to the regional mine planning group which currently consists of five
professionals.
This role will protect and advance Teck’s reputation and financial interests
through responsible application of engineering principles for mine planning and
design, working closely with site operational and functional teams, Technical &
Planning, the Project Development Group, and applicable Sustainability and
External Affairs groups.
This position will contribute technical and leadership expertise, inclusive of,
but not limited to, mine optimization and design, production planning and
scheduling, waste management, and supporting the development of operating and
capital costs. The outstanding appointee is expected to mentor juniors and
actively participate in succession planning. Overall, they will promote a
culture of innovation, continuous improvement and effective quality and
organizational change.

Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental
rules and procedures
- Own the North America mine planning team to deliver on the Life of Mine (LOM)
annual plans. This includes asset scenario analysis, optimizations,
incorporation of strategic site goals and financial evaluations
- Hands-on mine planning ownership including: pit limit optimization, reserve
updates, mine design, mine plans, schedule optimization, developing first
principles cost models
- Build and manage relationships with site and project staff and provide
support for other mining-related projects and initiatives
- Support the Company in mine planning and reserves and resources (R&R)
governance, including technical reports and disclosure statements
- Work with the Geoscience, Mining, R&R teams within Technical and Planning to
ensure mine design and reporting are in full compliance with all applicable
standards and regulations
- Lead and collaborate with site and project leads to improve development of
mine life extension options
- Drive implementation of and alignment to Teck’s closure standard to minimize
liabilities with respect to mine design and mining operations
Qualifications
- B.Sc. Engineering or equivalent in Mining, Civil, or Geotechnical
specializations
- Minimum 15 years varied work experience in related and complimentary field
- Registered or has ability to register as a professional engineer
- Prior experience at an operating base or precious metal site is required.
Experience at multiple operating sites is an asset
- Prior experience with Conceptual, Scoping, Pre-feasibility or Feasibility
studies is an asset
- Good understanding of business value drivers and use of business logic in
decision making
- Strong open pit mine planning experience from short, medium to long range
planning
- Prior experience leading LOM planning processes at an operating site.
Additional underground experience is considered an asset
- Experienced with and continues to be an active user of mine design, planning
and strategic optimization software such as Whittle, Vulcan, Deswik,
MineSight, Minemax and COMET
- Understanding of R&R reporting guidelines through Canadian Institute of
Mining
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven track record to work optimally and collaboratively with
multi-functional teams
- Strong interpersonal skills and personal efficiency
- Ability to travel 25% of the time

$160,395 - $198,127 a year
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s
relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
