Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Heritage and Urban Design, the successful candidate will assist the City’s Heritage section in the implementation of the designation strategy for culturally significant properties in the City of Richmond Hill. They will also assist in other tasks, as required, with City processes associated with the general conservation and preservation of identified cultural heritage assets. The work will contribute to the Department’s efforts to protect and conserve cultural and heritage assets within the City’s boundaries in relation to the impacts of recent Provincial legislative changes regarding the same. The successful candidate will assist with various activities, including program coordination, background research, report writing and administrative support. The Heritage Intern may also be required to attend public engagement events, site visits, Council meetings, and Heritage Richmond Hill Committee meetings to provide technical support and assistance to the Manager and Heritage Planning staff as needed.Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with the implementation of the City’s designation strategy for the City’s culturally significant properties
Conduct research and analysis of properties noted in the City of Richmond Hill’s Inventory of Cultural Heritage Resources
Attend site visits, Heritage Richmond Hill meetings and Council meetings as needed
Prepare presentations and any necessary mapping documents
Provide technical support and research assistance to the Manager and Heritage team
Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
Recent graduate or currently enrolled in a university program in Architecture, Architectural History, Architectural Preservation or a related field, with demonstrated experience in areas of Heritage Conservation
Experience conducting research and analysis, report writing and creating presentations
Municipal experience is an asset
Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of historical architectural styles and construction techniques
Demonstrated knowledge of archival research methods and resources in Ontario, and experience conducting property research
Knowledge of the Ontario Heritage Act policies and processes, and experience evaluating properties for heritage significance by applying Ontario Regulation 9/06 criteria is an asset
Understanding of recently enacted Provincial legislation, and its impact on Heritage Planning for municipalities is an asset
Basic project management and problem solving skills with ability to multi-task
Proven organizational skills and the ability to work within tight deadlines and competing priorities
Ability to synthesize information effectively and in a concise manner
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Other Requirements/ Assests:
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
Possession of CSA certified steel toe safety boots for site visits is preferred
Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license
Access to a vehicle to conduct site visits (mileage compensated)
Proof of vehicle insurance
