About Ouster: At Ouster, we are pioneering the future of Physical AI by redefining the capabilities of deep learning. Through our groundbreaking digital lidar solutions, including the Ouster Gemini perception platform and BlueCity smart city applications, we deliver the critical intelligence needed to build a safer and more efficient world.
The Opportunity: We are seeking a highly analytical and empathetic UI/UX Engineer to join our development team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in bridging the gap between complex customer workflows and intuitive, efficient user interfaces for our software tools and products. You will deeply analyze how our customers use our products today, identify pain points and opportunities, and translate those insights into clear, actionable UI/UX mockups that would guide our engineering teams. This is a unique opportunity to directly shape the user experience of cutting-edge lidar technology.
Key Responsibilities:
Workflow Analysis & User Research:
Conduct in-depth analysis of existing customer workflows within our current software tools, identifying usage patterns, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement.
Plan and execute comprehensive user research activities, including interviews, usability testing, surveys, and contextual inquiries, directly engaging with a diverse range of Ouster customers and internal stakeholders.
Develop user personas, journey maps, and empathy maps to thoroughly understand user needs, motivations, and pain points.
Collaborate closely with Field Application Engineers, Sales AEs, Product Managers and Engineering to understand business objectives and technical constraints related to customer workflows.
Mockups Generation & Documentation:
Create detailed wireframes, mockups, user flows, and interactive prototypes to illustrate proposed design solutions and user interactions.
Translate research findings and workflow analyses into clear, concise, and actionable user stories and UI/UX requirements for development teams.
Document user interface specifications, including layout, navigation, interaction patterns, and visual design elements, adhering to our design system.
Prioritize features and enhancements based on user impact and business value.
Design & Best Practices:
Apply industry best practices in UI/UX design, human-computer interaction (HCI), and usability principles to all design recommendations and requirements.
Stay ahead of emerging UI/UX trends, tools, and technologies, advocating for their strategic adoption where appropriate.
Contribute to the evolution and consistency of Ouster's design system and component library.
Collaboration & Communication:
Act as a strong advocate for the user throughout the product development lifecycle.
Present research findings, design concepts, and requirements to cross-functional teams (engineering, product, sales, FAEs) and gather constructive feedback.
Facilitate workshops and design sprints to foster collaborative problem-solving.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
3+ years of professional experience as a UI/UX Engineer, UX Researcher, or Product Designer, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in user research, workflow analysis, and requirements generation for complex software applications.
Proven experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative user research methods (user interviews, usability testing, surveys, A/B testing).
Demonstrated ability to translate complex user needs and business requirements into clear, actionable UI/UX specifications and design artifacts (wireframes, prototypes, user flows).
Proficiency with leading design and prototyping tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar).
Strong understanding of interaction design principles, usability heuristics, and information architecture.
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and research findings effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
Self-motivated, highly organized, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Good understanding of front-end development technologies (React / Angular. HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to better communicate with engineers.
Nice to Have:
Familiarity with lidar technology, 3D data visualization, or geospatial applications.
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
