ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
The Department of Physics is part of a dynamic academic community offering programs and courses to undergraduate and graduate students. We provide a comprehensive set of fundamental tools that can be brought to bear on many problems across a variety of fields. With world-class laboratories and outstanding faculty, the department fosters an in-depth understanding of an extremely diverse array of systems. Situated in the heart of downtown Toronto, our department is affiliated with various departments, institutes and research organizations, providing a broad network for our staff and students.
Department of Physics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 2-year appointment with a possibility of renewal.
The anticipated start date is October 1, 2025.
Our research group has an active research program on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The group plays a leading role in the analysis of ATLAS physics data, particularly in the areas of top-quark physics, Higgs physics and searches for exotic new particles. We are also leading Canadian efforts to upgrade the ATLAS tracker, the ITk. We are an ITk endcap hybrid and module assembly site.
The Research Associate is expected to independently carry out research on the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s LHC collider. This will include developing a physics analysis of the ATLAS data in one of the topical areas listed above, or other physics being done with the ATLAS data. In addition, they will be responsible for the electrical testing of readout hybrids and modules we are building for the ITk tracker upgrade of ATLAS. In this role, they will work closely with our CFI supported project scientist who is responsible for the overall production of detector parts, providing them with feedback on the quality of the parts being built and supporting our industrial partner by maintaining the testing electronics we have operating in the assembly cleanroom.
Applicants should apply online at the link below and include a covering letter, curriculum vitae and three reference names with their contact addresses and phone numbers. Any questions regarding this position should be directed to Ms. Crystal Liao at cliao@physics.utoronto.ca. All materials should be received by the closing date for full consideration.
This is a two-year limited term position with possibility of renewal.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education - PhD in particle physics have a comparable degree in a related field.
Experience – 1 to 3 years of demonstrated experience in particle physics including both data analysis and detector development. Candidates with a background in silicon tracker construction and testing are strongly preferred
Additional skills required include project management, leadership and interpersonal skills to assist in the guidance and implementation of the research project that is comprised of a multi-disciplinary and international team of scholars.
