Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support operations across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Northern Ontario, based out of our Winnipeg office. This role covers a diverse mix of hauling operations, recycling facilities, transfer stations, and landfills. As a key financial business partner to the General Managers and working with the Regional Controller, the Assistant Controller will: Perform complex business analysis and evaluate detailed pro-formas. Support productivity optimization and pricing strategies. Assist with bid creation/submittals. Responsible for annual budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Primary duty is to support the Regional Controller and business unit Managers by providing essential information and analysis that allows the Managers to make good business decisions that align with corporate goals and objectives. Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting Review, analyze, and approve financial statements. Verify and consolidate changes from operational managers. Provide clear explanations for moderate to large variances from plan. Accounts Payable & Receivable Ensure accuracy of coding, accruals, and invoice entry through training and oversight. Monitor ETS/Workday systems for rejected invoices and resolve issues. Review A/R aging reports and investigate anomalies. Fixed Assets Monitor capital requisitions and asset compliance. Review general ledger details against costs. Ensure proper year-end accruals and disposal procedures. Audit & Compliance Perform audit testing as required by auditors or the Regional Controller. Review internal audit reports and address recurring issues through training. Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and municipal regulations, as well as company policies. Budgeting & Forecasting Partner with managers to prepare and consolidate budgets and forecasts. Support both capital and financial planning processes. Ensure deliverables are met in line with corporate deadlines. Acquisitions, Divestitures & Bids Support due diligence, pro-forma analysis, and contract negotiations. Assist with municipal and other bid preparation and submission. Help integrate new acquisitions into Winnipeg and regional operations. Pricing & Operational Support Partner with managers to ensure pricing reflects true costs and target margins. Implement price adjustments to align with branch, regional, and corporate objectives. Education & Experience CPA designation (completed or in progress). 5+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience. Waste industry experience is an asset but not required. Skills & Abilities Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills. Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; strong skills in PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Access. Comfortable partnering with operations leaders in the field—not just a back-office role. Physical & Working Conditions Office environment 90–95% of the time. Ability to travel within Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Northern Ontario (approx. 3–5 nights per quarter).
