Prairie Dog Brewing is looking to round out our well-compensated, BBQ-focused kitchen team with a set of permanent, full-time, experienced (3-5 years), highly competent and creative cooks who enjoy the rush of a busy kitchen service on evenings and weekends. We need reliable, open minded and supportive team members with a passion for culinary arts and dedication to quality and personal improvement, who enjoy growing and supporting other, less experienced cooks at the same time. We work as a team.
Why Prairie Dog?
We know you have lots of other options to look at, so let's cut right to the chase:
- Our kitchen team is well paid. Most restaurants only pay their kitchens a tip-out of up to 2% of sales. We pay our kitchen team a 5.5% tip out, on average (we are a no tip expected establishment, but that doesn't stop our team from earning tips because we do such a great job with our food and service). Expect to be earning between $25 and $30 per hour worked, regardless of day of week/time of day.
- You won't be yelled at in our kitchen. We are a safe, inclusive and supportive workplace; while we have high expectations for our team, we don't believe in driving performance through fear tactics and abuse. We reward based on job performance and attitude
- We offer a full set of company co-paid health and wellness benefits to everyone who works over 20 hours per week
- All our team members earn a lot of free beer and other beverages, and highly discounted merch and meals
- Our kitchen is clean and well maintained
- We encourage creativity. Our leadership team is here to help foster growth on our team and build your skills, rather than dictating everything about the menu from the top down
About the Job
As a member of our kitchen team, your purpose is to contribute to a memorable, positive experience for our other team members and guests. Kitchen team members participate in teamwork service, allowing you to work all around the kitchen and hone your own skills, sharing the workload while also learning our food prep (including BBQ), board calling, and food expediting routines and roles. Team members are encouraged to contribute ideas for menu specials, recommend changes to existing items, and to help train and develop each other in new areas along the way. What we absolutely are not looking for is anyone who will bring baggage with them from the industry, such as a sexist or abusive attitude toward others. We are a team of professionals; everyone at Prairie Dog Brewing is equally valued and has an important job to do. Prairie Dog Brewing is a meritocracy meaning people are promoted, receive bonuses and are recognized for showing up and showing the team what they are capable of.
The kinds of duties you'll perform in this role include:
- Being a supportive team member to those you are working alongside both Front of House and Kitchen
- Accurately and consistently cooking and plating food during our busy lunch and dinner services
- Calling board for other line cooks
- Coordinating plating activities with our Food Expeditor
- Taking the Food Expeditor station or assisting in dish as needed
- Performing in-service food prep activities as well as rotating through morning shifts to show your skills and help with out-of-service food prep
- Setting up and tearing down the cooking line
- Setting up the line for dinner service when working morning/day shift
- Cleaning the kitchen at the end of the night
Required Qualifications and Abilities
The following are either required or highly valued skills, education and experience:
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of busy restaurant kitchen experience
- Physically fit -- you must be able to stand on your feet for long stints, working in close quarters above and around heat sources, slippery floors and teammates, and capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted (such as 5-gallon pails of meat in brine)
- Excellent knife skills
- Up to date Safe Food Handling Certification (Advanced Food Safety Certification preferred) -- we take food safety seriously, including food allergies
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada
- This position requires evening and weekend work - including closes. You must have a reliable mode of transportation that allows you to commute during the early morning hours when Calgary Transit is not available (such as after 1am on Friday/Saturday nights)
- Great references from former teammates
- An employee identity verification and criminal background check may be required
Compensation
As mentioned earlier, this job pays between $24 and $30 per hour, including our Staff Funds tip outs (on biweekly payroll). Staff Funds payouts are typically between $6-$8/hr, and the base hourly wage range for this experienced role is between $17-$23/hr (to be determined based on experience and references). Wages may be adjusted during a 90-day probationary period based on individual performance.
Upon completion of your probationary period, you'll become eligible for co-paid benefits (valued between about $500-$1,200 per year), as well as a Flexible Health and Wellness Spending Account (up to $600/yr).
Full time, must have availability Sunday-Thursday
