The Opportunity:
The Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun newsroom has an immediate opening for a reporter who will help drive robust enterprise coverage of the federal public service.
The new public service reporter will join a growing team dedicated to uncovering untold stories about the National Capital Region’s 150,000 government employees and the departments and agencies they work for. This reporter will explore the relationship between federal institutions and Canada's capital, help explain how the business of government is changing, and hold those who lead it to account.

What you’ll do:
Create engaging, original journalism about the federal public service by connecting the dots on emerging issues, identifying problems and exploring solutions
Pinpoint the federal government's movers and shakers, and build trust with sources within the public service to tell their stories and break news.
File access-to-information requests and sift through data to find hidden, untold stories.
Work collaboratively with editors, photographers and digital producers to present those stories.
Balance same-day news stories with longer enterprise features, profiles and investigations.

Able to research and collect information from both traditional and non-traditional sources.
An excellent communicator, with well above average writing skills, who is able to break down complex issues into clear and engaging language.
Able to develop a robust network of sources.
Enthusiastic about experimenting with emerging storytelling platforms.
Interested in listening to and learning from readers.
Qualifications:
A journalism degree or significant work experience in the media.
Experience working in a daily news environment.
Bilingualism (English-French) is an asset.
A valid G driver’s license.
