Position Summary
We’re seeking a mid-level Infrastructure Engineer to help operate and maintain
the backbone of the Open VSX Registry. Reporting to the Senior Manager, IT
Operations your role focuses on building high-availability mirror
infrastructure, secure content distribution, and robust cloud operations.
Working remotely, you’ll collaborate with our Site Reliability and DevOps teams
to ensure uptime, scalability, and a seamless experience for developers around
the world.
This role is central to achieving our mission of empowering developers, enabling
collaboration, and ensuring user freedoms by delivering services that are
secure, resilient, and aligned with the strategic goals of the Foundation.
Location: Ottawa, Ontario. Must be able to physically go to a data centre when
needed to assist with physical work.
What You’ll Do
- Design and maintain high-availability mirror infrastructure for Open VSX
content distribution
- Manage cloud resources across European and global providers (e.g., AWS, GCP,
Azure)
- Implement security controls, backups, and disaster recovery strategies
- Support PostgreSQL and ElasticSearch clusters for performance and reliability
- Automate infrastructure tasks using scripting and infrastructure-as-code
tools
- Monitor system health using observability platforms (e.g., Prometheus,
Grafana, ELK stack)
- Troubleshoot infrastructure issues and respond to incidents
- Collaborate with SREs and developers to improve CI/CD pipelines and
deployment workflows
- Provide technical support to users and community contributors
- Maintain documentation and contribute to operational playbooks
What You’ll Bring
- 3+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or systems
administration
- Strong understanding of Linux systems and container orchestration
(Kubernetes, Docker)
- Experience with cloud platforms and services (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch, and distributed systems
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python) and IaC tools
(Terraform, Ansible)
- Knowledge of security best practices and compliance standards
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a collaborative mindset
- Bonus: experience supporting open source registries or developer platforms
