Anisinaabemowin Manager - Education

JOB SUMMARY:
The goal of the Anishinaabemowin Manager is to implement programs that continuously increase the immersion of the Sagamok Education system in the Language, to coordinate programs that infuse Ansihinaabe Aadziwin in all Sagamok Education activities and processes, and to advise the Director on strategies to make Anishinaabe language and culture the defining characteristics of Sagamok Education within a generation.
The Anishinaabemowin Manager will work collaboratively with all Education departments and other business units across the Sagamok organization to meet their objectives.
POSITION DUTIES:
Collaborate with Sagamok’s Language Committee, Culture Committee, and other strategists identified by Chief and Council to develop educational strategies
Assist the Language Committee and the Education Committee in developing and executing distinct, interdependent strategies to:
Promote the learning of Anishinaabemowin amongst learners, families, and the community, using any resources available or created, and
Promote the learning and preservation of dialects distinct to the Z’Gamok community
Develop and maintain a program for Anishinaabemjig (language speakers), Elders, Knowledge-Keepers, and other educators to build capabilities with
Classroom management
Special education practices
Second-Language best practices
Provide managerial and pedagogical leadership to Anishinaabemowin as Second Language, Land-Based Learning, and other personnel dedicated to the promotion of Anishinaabe Aadziwin
Advise the Director of staffing and material needs, now and in the future, for continuous growth of language and cultural programming
Champion the growth of language and culture programming amongst the community
Develop programming targeted at parents and caregivers on Anishinaabemowin and cultural practices
Develop programming targeted to Elders and language speakers on effective classroom management, special education, and second-language teaching methods
Provide written reports on a quarterly basis, or as needed by and agreed to with the Director;
Produce and oversee program workplan relative to scope, schedule and budget;
Attend regular meetings as required, including but not limited to Sagamok Education managers’ meetings and training sessions
Pursue funding opportunities beyond core funding for language and culture growth
Supervise the completion of safety plans for all outdoor education opportunities
Manage contracts (employment, volunteer, or otherwise) with volunteers, visiting elders, and other knowledge-holders that are not made formal employees of Sagamok
Participate in networking, training, and workshop meetings
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Valid driver’s license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
Must be able to work flexible hours.
Sign and maintain an annual oath of confidentiality.
Secure and maintain certification in Privacy and Confidentiality.
Must provide a criminal record check prior to commencing employment.
Incumbent is subject to three months’ probation.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a Bachelor of Education degree with a minimum of 5 years teaching experience;
A Masters in Education or a related discipline, or current work towards a Masters, or other formal training in research and reporting methodologies, is an important asset
An equivalent credential through an Indigenous-led accreditation process will be considered on a case-by-case basis
Must have working knowledge of Anishnaabemowin Language
Fluency is an asset, however, willingness and a plan to learn and grow towards competence in Anishinaabemowin is critical
Ability to research and report on effectiveness of second language practice, and ability to coach second language practitioners, is also critical
Must have program management experience
Must have proven facilitation skills
A comprehensive understanding of First Nation issues and First Nations education
Must be a proven team player with strong interpersonal skills including ability to resolve conflicts, diplomacy, achieve consensus and able to work comfortably with internal staff
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills in both Anishinaabemowin and English;
Must be currently, or willing to become, computer literate and be proficient with Microsoft Office, use of Internet, electronic mail, and capable of developing multi-media presentations and conducting research in electronic environments
Ability to meet multiple and/or unexpected deadlines in a demanding environment
Familiarity with current K-8 Programs, Program Development, Student Learning Assessments and Data Management preferred.
