St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is an Academic Health Science Centre affiliated with McMaster University and a tertiary referral centre for Central South Ontario offering services at three main sites, including St. Joseph's Hospital (Charlton Campus), the Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (King Campus), and the Margaret and Charles Juravinski Centre for Integrated Healthcare (West 5th Campus).
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant (PA) works collaboratively with the interprofessional Emergency Department team to deliver healthcare to patients. Within the Emergency Department, the PA is authorized to extend physician services through the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, intervention, referral, management, treatment, and evaluation of patients requiring acute health services.
St Joseph's Emergency Department is a high-performing department ranked 16th out of 73 across Ontario, annually serving approximately 66,000 patients. The Emergency Department is part of an academic teaching hospital that supports interprofessional learning for multiple health professional programs, including PA students, NP students, medical students, nursing students, and others.
This position would entail working within the dynamic Emergency Department team to assess, intervene and treat patients in the department and arriving by Hamilton Paramedic Service. Working with Emergency Physicians, various clinical specialties, allied health and nursing, the Physician Assistant role is critical to timely patient care and optimized efficient flow. The Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is also supported by a unique interdisciplinary team including social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Emergency Physicians and will provide a broad range of medical care to a varied patient population.
QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:
•Graduate of MOHLTC- approved program including the Canadian Forces Physician Assistant Training Program, Graduate of a Canadian or American Physician Assistant Training Program, or trained International Medical Graduate
•Certification (CCPA or PA-C) or eligible for certification through the PA Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or United States (NCCPA)
•Experience in an Emergency Department setting as part of maintenance program strongly preferred
