As the successful candidate, you will edit the stories of energetic, curious reporters at various levels of experience, based in Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John. You will write sharp headlines. You will ensure the delivery of news to CBC’s digital platforms. You will keep our audience top of mind. You’re able to work quickly and calmly to deliver stories that are clear, accurate, balanced and crisply told — and packaged with visual and other elements in an engaging way. You are organized, your judgment is solid and your standards high, and you pay exceptional attention to detail. You are well-read with a sharp eye for a range of stories that connect with contemporary Canada. You are a critical thinker with a keen interest in news that affects our audience and the communities we cover. You’re a mentor, coach and diplomat. This role requires a full-time on-site presence. Job responsibilities: Copy edit breaking, developing, enterprise and feature news, as well as multimedia projects, video and audio copy, video titles and photo descriptions. Identify gaps and other problems in stories and work collaboratively with writers and producers to address them. Work with journalists to develop story ideas, assignments and structure, and give them feedback. Package digital stories according to mobile-first considerations. Support our digital strategy, including our greater emphasis on video. Pay attention to our lineup and update as needed. Help reporters develop their digital writing skills. Communicate, uphold and contribute to best practices. Relevant skills and experience: Five years of experience as a journalist. Substantial recent experience copy editing in a fast-paced, multi-platform daily news environment. Ability to leverage visual storytelling tools and adapt to evolving technologies. Excellent news judgment. An understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices. Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism. Cultural awareness and sensitivity. Stellar communication and interpersonal skills. Aptitude with text and video content management systems. Knowledge of industry trends and practices. University degree or equivalent experience. Ability to work weekends, early mornings and statutory holidays, when required. Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
