Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.
The Intern, Structural Engineer will provide support to ships with ongoing design and those going through production support. The intern will perform structural calculations based on Classification Society rules or basic engineering judgment using first-principle engineering calculations or advanced Finite Element Analysis software. The intern will also create sketches and develop drawings under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer. Additional duties will be assigned as needed.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you’ll do
Focus on ship design and construction
Provide calculations, sketches, and drawings for ship global structures and foundations using Classification Rules
Perform studies and collect data for Structural Engineering as needed
Create standard calculation guidelines using Classification Rules when required
Work directly under a Professional Engineer and support with daily assignments
Perform other duties as assigned
What you’ll bring
Enrollment in at least the 2nd year of a Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture program
Good understanding of basic strength calculations using first principles or Finite Element Analysis (2D or 3D)
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills (written and spoken)
Ability to work cross-functionally as part of a team with minimal direction
Motivated with creativity, initiative, and persistence
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with other engineering disciplines
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Strong presentation, organization, and problem-solving skills
PC proficiency with solid understanding of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Experience with AutoCAD; familiarity with FEA software is an asset

Seaspan’s Internships are 4 or 8 months in duration. We require a full-time commitment Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
